I'm a bit surprised I've not seen a thread about this. Steve Neil, a friend of Doug Drexler and a Hollywood makeup artist, scratch built a 6 ft replica of the TOS Enterprise. The article and glorious pictures can be found here:

This guy has mad skills. (and access to plans, photo's and info most of us here would kill for...)

I want one too .... Mrs.Q2 would kill me....

Absolutely beautiful job.

Still don't understand those who think the design wouldn't hold up on the big screen.

The basic design is nice, but some of the lighting need work. With a little modification it could be made to stand up to pretty much any scrutiny. With huge bulb technology they did what they could, but today we dont need to be slaves to that. For me, the movie refit is the ultimate expression of the design. This is TV budget level, that was outrageous movie level.

Ya- I watched the build... The guy is an impressive model maker, but his photography made me want to puke. I couldn't watch his videos they were so shakey...

Cool ship though!

The only things that I think need a little additional work on his model are the lighting in the warp engines (which he mentioned in the video as needing a little more red in the blinking effects) and weathering on the top of the main hull. That's pretty well documented and should be do-able, especially with this guy's apparent skills.

Yep, been following it, and the subsequent Captain's chair build, and integration into a 3D bridge set coming soon!

And grid lines! He forgot the grid lines!! :borg:

You are being sarcastic right?

I still am disgusted by the Smithsonian's remake of the E... It wasn't a restoration. It was a highly over interpretive re-build. And that pisses me off because of all places, they should have known better. Coming from working in the museum field, I lost a lot of respect for them.

Cool museum though!

I have to agree.

Part of what makes the Old 'Prise futuristic is that her seams are not showing.

Yes. There have been HUGE fights on HobbyTalk and Starship Modeler over the pros and cons of grid lines on the upcoming Polar Light 1/35 TOS E.

Mr. Neil has certainly heard about it, because I think I saw him comment something like "and no damn grid lines!" which is, of course, his preference.
