Stereotypes of the '00s.

Every decade has the images and stereotypes they invoke when you think about them. We all have, in our heads, what the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and even to a degree the 90s looked like, regardless of whether things were really that way or not. Not everyone in the 90s wore Zubas pants and backwards hats. ;)

The movie "Back to the Future" did a good job of both depicting an idealized 1950s like what was "known" from TV and rose-colored recollections of the time. It also somehow managed to make a good "idea" of what the 1980s were like while also taking place in the 1980s. Between references to aerobics, Nikes, Pepsi Free and even the blight "Reaganomics" and malls brought to towns.

So, what do you think people will remember 2000-2010 looking like? What tropes, fashions, and stuff sort of represent that decade? Anything on the likes of 8-bit videogames? Parachute pants, and big brown cars?

Hair:
- Frosting and/or tip highlights for girls.
- Short spiky hair for guys. Alternatively, fauxhawks or bedhair.

Clothes & shoes:
- leggings & ugg boots for girls
- skinny/stacked jeans for guys
- nasty/tacky/slutty slogan T-shirts for both
- crocs

Technology:
- Apple
- Google
- Youtube
- Facebook

Politics:
- 9/11 and its lengthy aftermath in Iraq & Afghanistan
- The financial crisis (though it could be argued that its impacts fit better into the current decade)

Entertainment:
- sequel and reboot movies
- reality TV

... there were some other nicer trends too, though:

- smartphones & mobile internet
- partly related, satnav becoming ubiquitous
- an upsurge in niche expert (admittedly, sometimes faux-expert) content online
- inflation generally under good control through our ability to import deflation from China

It's my understanding that the thread is about things of the time that seem to be stuck in the 2000s. A lot of these things mentioned seem to be still active in the 2010s, albeit in a form where the impact has diminished.

It may be me, though, but this specimen that was almost everywhere in the 2000s seems to have vanished into obscurity since the 2010s dawned...

Crazy-frog?? ringtones?

crazy house-prices is another things of the '00s. I bought a house before the boom, sold it at the peak and got the next one after the crash.

MySpace is a good one.

Basically. Just "what would a movie or TV show from -say- 2030" set in 2005 look like? Say if it was a "That '00s Show!" or a "Hot Tub Time Machine"-like movie (or even a Back to the Future movie) depict the world of 2005. What jokes/gags, etc. would be in there to poke at the audience HEY IT'S 2005!!! The recent movie adaptation of Sleepy Hollow had this in taking place in the 1970s, plenty of nudges at it being 1970s. (Some to absurd degrees where in one scene we see a collection of 70s board games on a table of the family matriarch.)

In "Hot Tub Time Machine" they literally did the joke of the guy talking into an old, huge, cell-phone going, "I'm talking into a CELLULAR PHONE!" and another character trying to affirm what year they're in by asking a passing character what color Michael Jackson's skin is.

Those types of things. When we see people in movies when it's supposed to be the 1950s, pretty formal dress, slacks, thin ties, and poodle skirts are common. The 1960s hippies, and more "grungy" dressing is common. The 1970s, vibrant colors, afros, peace signs, shirts buttoned up only to the third or so button from the top, platform shoes. The 1980s more pastel colors and browns, "the dry look", horrible mustaches.

The 1990s getting much more into the grunge look, pre-distressed jeans, parachute pants, saggy pants, Zubaz..

So on. What will the 2000-2010 period look like from film and TV makers in the 2020s-2030s. What stereotypes, or music will stand out the most? TV shows?

What most will say, "Hey, it's 2006!"

Political aspects are probably too easy. Everyone thinks of Ford stumbling on AF1's steps, Reagan's "tear down this wall!", Bush I's "no new taxes" and throwing up on a PM, theres shloads of stiff on Clinton, Bush Jr. will probably suffer harder but incidents like the pretzel that nearly killed him will stand out.

People can't even agree on what to call the 00's. As someone said it has to be things that fade away with the new decade, a lot of which is probably not clear yet. Here's hoping it's hipsters.
