BREAKING: Warner Bros has set Scott Cooper to re-write and direct The Stand, the seminal post-apocalyptic Stephen King novel. That means that while the studio has Ben Affleck as its new Caped Crusader for Batman Vs. Superman, Affleck has withdrawn from The Stand. He had been set in late 2011 to write the script and direct. Affleck is busy directing and starring in his scripted adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s Live By Night for Warner Bros.

It would have worked best as a miniseries on cable.

Otherwise, I think they should do a trilogy. First movie is the infection, second movie is rebuilding, and last movie the final confrontation.

I've always liked The Stand, but it just doesn't seem like it could translate into a movie, or even a trilogy. The ABC miniseries wasn't a bad adaptation of the book, IMO. I'm not sure there's a point in making a movie of the book now. Is it because of the current popularity of apocalyptic stories (e.g., The Walking Dead)?

I'm not sure I understand why this is going forward. It was already done on TV. Doesn't anybody in Hollywood have any other ideas that could be made into a movie? Aren't there any other books that haven't been done yet?

If there aren't any new ideas, maybe they could remake Maximum Overdrive. That one could for damn sure stand a re-do.
