Stealing is alright aslong as its done for the thrill and not money?

Very bad message to put across on a kids show, surprised there havent been more complaints. What do you guys think??

Re: Stealing is alright aslong as its done for the thrill and not mone

Dr Who is a show for all the family, not a kids show.

It was a bit dodgy, but not really dubious enough to get your knickers a twist over. It's not like the Doctor advocated mugging old ladies or shooting up with heroin or anything.

Or pimping the aristocracy. :P

OK then you fussy bugger a show kids will be watching lol, and yes it was dodgey, if I had kids id of been pretty peed off, stealing is wrong in any form or for any reason.

It's not a problem then. If stealing is wrong in any form or for any reason, there's no way that kids can avoid being corrupted by the vile influence of Robin Hood or Jean Valjean. Or Jack Sparrow. Or the good Doctor himself. We'll just have to accept it.

stealing is wrong in any form or for any reason.

Such black-&-white absolutes aren't seriously valid in the real world. If your child was dying, and someone had the cure but wouldn't give it to you, you would of course take it anyway to save their life. There are millions of other examples I could come up with, but you get my point.

Meanwhile, on the flipside of that argument, if their message is as you say, then I'll remind the BBC and RTD of that the next time I download a Doctor Who episode. "Oh it's not wrong Russel....I did it for the thrill of watching your show...not for profit..." ;)

Since the programme has made a point of showing that the Doctor isn't always right and certainly isn't bound by conventional morality, I don't see much of a problem. Like the episode points out, the Doctor stole the TARDIS. And over the years he's committed plenty of other crimes, starting with trespassing just about every time he lands somewhere. And let's face it, the odds of many children actually saying "But Doctor Who does it!" are pretty slim.

Re: Stealing is alright aslong as its done for the thrill and not mone

One purpose of fiction is to allow us to (very remotely) have the vicarious experience of things that are impossible or wrong in real life. It's pretty much the same debate as with violence. Everybody loves their fictional violence (and other kinds of thrills), including kids. It's in human nature.

All those things get a pass especially in the adventure/fantasy/SF genres. Lots of the realistic shows teach kids the right lessons, I believe.
I don't think kids dress up in hero costumes and go stealing. I mean they soon learn to make the difference between the fantasy world and the real world.

And we fantasy-loving grown-ups know right from wrong. We were educated, although we saw the same kinds of bad examples in shows as children. I wouldn't worry too much about the next generation. Unless we don't feel up to the parenting task... :p

For the record, The Infinite Quest establishes that the Doctor has 3,005 outstanding convictions, including:,

- 1,400 counts of minor traffic violations
- 250 counts of evading library fines
- 18 counts of planetary demolition

Plus, he stole the TARDIS.

Obviously the Doctor isn't a big believer in property rights. ;)

Ehhh, he got awful testy when Torchwood impounded the TARDIS.

Eh. Not that testy. He was pretty casual about it, actually. "You'll never get in."

True, but you have to admit that he's very protective of her.

Re: Stealing is alright aslong as its done for the thrill and not mone

I must admit that I was surpirsed that she got away with it (apparently) and there didn't seem to be any comeuppance. However, she did use her ill gotten gains for the good of the folks on the bus and didn't benefit from them, so I can see that could be the justification if justification were needed for her escape from the law. I must be getting old because I thought it was a bad message to send to the kids!

Re: Stealing is alright aslong as its done for the thrill and not mone

The worst possible message to send to "the kids" is that every entertainment they're exposed to must have a message to send to "the kids."

YES. That.

for a man who has a time machine, library fines should not be a problem for him.

I think you'll find that children are impressionable blank slates who are molded entirely by the television they watch/books they read.

Nothing to do with their parents then?

I spent the 80s watching the A-Team, but I never once built a tank out of some old scrap...

Re: Stealing is alright aslong as its done for the thrill and not mone

I think the worst message that that episode sent out was the doctor aiding and abetting a criminal by allowing her to escape from the law.
