STD to feature F-bombing, gore

On a recent STD featurette, one of the showrunners was gleefully describing how the new series is going to allow the cast to use hardcore profanity and not shy away from gore. He seemed to act like this was really revolutionary and a prime reason to watch STD. Is this series already so desperate for viewers that they're leaning on 'shock factor' as justification to watch?

What are you on about? When asked about profanity, they've all stated that it doesn't really work in Trek so will be kept to a minimum.

As for gore, they've said the same thing. They purely intend to only use it when it fits naturally.

As long as it's used very conservatively, then I don't mind.

Profanity isn’t shocking anymore.

If my mom was watching DSC and heard the word "fuck" she would FREAK OUT. Her reaction to swear words is ridiculous. When quoting someone else who used profanity, she spells the word out instead of saying the word.

Done in the right context I'm ok with it.

But done for the sake of doing it would make it hard to swallow

"Desperate?"

So does my mom, but she’s in her 60s and not the target audience for anything.

The odd bit of swearing in a film or TV show hardly raises an eyebrow these days. Next you'll be saying that showing a nipple in prime time is cause for maximum panic.

Trek already did gore in TNG "Conspiracy." I vaguely remember reading something about TPTB doing it on purpose to kind of thumb their noses at the American broadcast industry's hypocrisy of knee-jerk censoring of anything remotely sexual but not saying a thing about violence. But still, it was disgusting and out of place for Trek.

And the profanity has already been discussed at length in another thread; no need for a retread.
