STC: To Boldly Indiegogo

Figured it was worth starting a discussion thread on this STC campaign, since it begins this Saturday and yesterday they posted a kickoff video on their Vimeo channel. In keeping with forum rules, I will not link to the fundraiser, but you can find it or the video easily enough.

Interesting to note that the campaign was originally to have been on Kickstarter and titled "The Final Kirkstarter." To speculate a bit on why it was changed, I wonder if it has to do with the fact that they have 6 more episodes to be funded and Indiegogo lets you keep whatever you raise even if the goal is not met... thereby leaving the door open for future fundraising, both in name and in practice.

Star Trek Continues has a large fan base, so I don't think raising money on Kickstarter is an issue at all. They probably want to see how well they would do using Indiegogo.

Considering the hot water Axanar is in STC must feel reasonably confident in going after a final big push to finance its last half dozen episodes.

Each STC episode costs about $50,000 (I believe). That means they need about $300,000 to cover the cost of those episodes. Will they have any stretch goals beyond that, say maybe $500,000?

If successful we're left to wonder if anything could come afterward, after those six episodes. While it's interesting to ponder the possibilities--such as a TMP like followup--that's an idea that would probably be a lot more expensive than doing TOS era stories in terms of sets and costumes and such.

I think my days of giving money to fan films is over.
I've been quite selective about this and will continue to be so. I've given small amounts to STC before and I will this time again primarily because they haven't abused fans' trust.

Personally, I think crowd funding has gotten out of control.

I'd rather see them go slightly back in time and do more episodes between 11 and 12 (12-13 being the finale). Or if this current campaign is hugely successful, maybe they'd extend the planned run to 14 or 15 episodes up front.

Alec Peters is full of Crap. He is just a con man trying to get your money to pay himself! Do not blame STC or other fan films for Alec. People have the right to ask for there money back from Alec. If people are unhappy with Axanar, then ask for a refund!

And in the unlikely event that STC unexpectedly got sued, I see Vic Mignogna as the kind of guy who would try to refund everyone's money to the extent possible.

Whats the point of your post BoredShipCapt'n? Are you for STC? Alec took in 38,000 in his pocket..That is a fact, look at his axanar report. That was just for 2014-2015 We are waiting to see what he took for this year!

Ok then its good to know that we are on the same side. I hope more people support both STC and STNV both have worked hard to make there fan films.

Something I think could be fun--assuming they got the right cast--would be to redress the existing sets to allow them to do Pike era stories. Firstly it would be a lot more affordable. Secondly it would allow them to explore the path NBC didn't take.

STC, STNV & Renegades all have proven they can produce there featured product with their crowd funding, Axanar has not. It's not so much about these productions using crowd funding it more about can they put out a product as a result of the crowd funding. CBS knows who is legit and who is not. I think STC will be just fine.
