It didn't really have to. It was more of an exploration of the general concept of missing time, similar to what prisoners experience after decades of incarceration, or Tom Hanks being marooned in Castaway, only much much longer.

I guess what I thought of most wasn't so much David Bowman as the guy in Interstellar that had to sit around waiting for years to link up with the other ship due to time-dilation.

Tom Hanks being marooned for a few years on a deserted island WAS an exploration of his character. He was crafty enough that he managed to feed and shelter himself when he only had the most basic tools at his disposal, and finally after years of planning he escaped his prison. He did attempt to kill himself which failed, but he resolved to return to his life.
That was ONE person's journey. There were literally hundreds of other outcomes if you put different characters in the same situation (early suicide, died from exposure, died from illness, drowned in the ocean, etc.)

For this episode of STC, apart from melancholy there is literally no change in Kirk's character and that is ridiculous.

You don't think old Kirk sacrificing himself counts for something?

I thought the episode had problems (I voted "fair") but they had less to do with the character scenes and mostly about building a sense of mortal danger/suspense. The "evil computer" of Ti never seems that menacing, just sort of whiny. So there are really bigger fish to fry as far as the episode's faults.

A good story should build steadily up to a climax, include a few unpredictable twists and turns, and then deliver a suitable payoff. STC has the best acting but it still suffers from these deficiencies.

My thoughts exactly. As with any production (fan-made or even professional), it's not without its flaws. But, as a massive TOS fan...these are just so damn fun to watch. It's uncanny how much Vic can channel Kirk, as well.

Makes you wonder whay it might have been like if bloopers like this had come out for TOS during the summer hiatus. Breaking the fourth wall in that way would probably have won them even more fans.
