STC Ep. 7: "Embrace The Winds" speculation and discussion....

Now this should be the finale of the series! Admiral Kirk paying his respects to his ship before her grand refit…

That was the general idea. When the guidelines were originally issued, I realized we might never get to see how Continues was intended to end, so I Photoshopped what I imagined the final shot of the series might look like: a newly promoted Kirk taking one last wistful look at the bridge of the Enterprise.

Thats assuming the uniform change happened at that time. It could actually have come later not long before the events of TMP.

But that would throw me right out of the story. They are already calling out way more than what is reasonable for what might have been done in TOS to be credible. Slipping in TMP uniforms would be too much forecasting and any remaing shred of seeming authenticity would be gone.

Back on the subject of Episode 7, I wonder how anyone was struck by the George Takei callout about internment camps. It's well intentioned, but I question whether something like that could have gotten on air in 1969, when many people in charge of the program (and many in the audience) were World War II veterans, and most would at least have remembered the war years. It was probably a huge step in the Sixties even to have a Japanese character in the regular cast, but to take that further step of criticizing US wartime domestic policy... would that have even come close to happening?

I suspect TOS could have addressed something like Japanese interment camps the way they got away with handling other hot-button issues: allegorically. Probably something along the lines of "Detained," that 1st season Enterprise episode with Dean Stockwell and the Suliban.

I find it somewhat telling that this episode is one I have not yet revisted. Previously I revisted the episodes easily two or three times not long after they were released. I even revisted "The White Iris" a couple of times just to examine it more and that was my least favourite STC episode.

Same here... I usually watch them a handful of times each, but this time I've only done one rewatch. And I know I've only seen the tacked on ending speeach to Episode 6 once. They have slowly been going completely away from TOS adventures and into TNG preaching.

Wonder Woman had an episode dealing dealing with the impact of Interment Camps a few years later in '77.

I do not want to see them actually do this.

Okay, I get it. Don't read too much into my Photoshop efforts. I just thought it would be fun to try to depict what Mignogna would look like in the TMP admiral uniform; I'm not saying they should actually do it.

I don't disagree that the post-TOS references are distracting. I'm not going to kick up a fuss over the odd mention of the Xindi or whatever, and while I really didn't like the premise of "Embracing the Winds," I don't necessarily believe that tackling issues that they wouldn't have addressed on the real TOS is a negative. However, there was just so much stuff in this episode that felt out of place in a TOS episode (the unresolved mystery of the doomed ship, Scotty's and Uhura's meaningful gaze, Chekov's career advancement, etc.), it had a cumulative effect that shattered any illusion that I was watching something that might have been produced in the 60s.

My remark was not a comment on your Photoshop skills, but on the notion of STC actually going this far with the post TOS callouts, which have gone much too far with already.

The only statement I'm aware of is that they're trying to complete them as quickly as possible and are optimistic about being able to do so.
