STC Ep. 7: "Embrace The Winds" speculation and discussion....

Yeah, basically, Doug was promised creative input, and then Zicree dropped a (terrible, I read it) script on him which had little to do with the show they had discussed or sold the backers on. It was less 50's rocket sci-fi and more Flash Gordon meets TNG while ripping "A Whole New World" out of Aladdin (albeit the trailer makes it look like they ended up shooting a different script). :ack:

Might be a different script, but it doesn't look any better.

I'm wondering if...since we haven't heard anything further regarding STC's status if it could mean "no news is good news." Might it be a case of CBS not definitively saying "yes" or "no," (at least publicly) but quietly letting STC go forward albeit with a few tweaks.

I guess the silence from Star Trek Continues gives me more hope than it normally it, given everything that has happened.

episode 7 seems to be safe, not so sure about 8, maybe that will need to be done as a 30 minute production, and anything beyond that seems sadly unlikely, because I just cant see CBS giving any one production a free pass, whatever that history's production.

If STC made episodes 8-13 as 30-35 or maybe even 40 minute productions I wouldn't be surprised if CBS didn't even blink. Seriously.

What it would mean, though, is really tightening up the writing.

but wouldnt CBS loose their authority, by not enforcing the rules fairly?

They lose nothing as they state they are guidelines, not hard rules, and no approval for anything is given by them for ANY fanfilm. CBS retains ALL rights to do whatever they please and cede nothing.

The lead of licensing has said repeatedly CBS isn't looking to review/approve anything with regard to fanfilms. If they have any real objection, or are contemplating any action they'll let the group they have an objection with know.

Go back and read the guidelines. JVC himself said they were guidelines, not rules.

If your production is 15 minutes (or less) then they promise they won't say a word. If it's 30 minutes and follows the rest (or likely most significant) guidelines then they won't complain. Yet they don't followup and say what will happen if you go beyond the guidelines.

JVC actually said they wouldn't be strictly policing productions with a stopwatch. And a 30 minute fan production is more than a 30 minute television episode. It's 8 minutes more of screentime without commercials unlike an actual television episode. Thats huge.

This guideline alone could actually help fanfilms greatly by forcing tight creative writing to the fore.

To some extent I think STC has earned some genuine goodwill with CBS because of how they have comported themselves. Thats why I feel there is hope for STC to go forward not greatly changed from what we are familiar with.

And CBS has the right to enforce (or not) their "guidelines" as they see fit.

I'm hoping that the whole implication that already-under-production shows can finish up what their working on can be combined with STC's doing their "last kickstarter to finish the series" giving them a loophole that all 13 episodes have been put into production via the promises made via kickstarter.... :D

Seriously, though, they have always been on fantastic terms with CBS, even with the youtube / white iris removal, and the not for profit status, and the support of the Roddenberry clan.... if anyone is going to be given a full pass to finish its stated mission, it will be STC.

They won't officially be given a 'pass' - more possible CBS just won't raise an objection. Remember the guidelines aren't a: "Follow this or we WILL raise an objection/take legal action..."
they're more a
"If you want to be reasonably sure we won't raise an objection or take legal action, follow these guidelines..."

Bottom line: Nothing is absolutely guaranteed with regard to Fan Films and CBS. If CBS objects to something a Star Trek Fan Film group produces (whether or not said group has or hasn't followed every guideline in making their fan film); said group will most likely be contacted directly by CBS. What CBS ultimately decides to do will be a result of how said group responds to any objections raised; and what they do (if anything) to appease CBS' concerns.

I think many are getting hung up on some of the words in these guidelines without understanding what is really being said.

I wish Renegades had filmed The Nichols/Koenig swan song in full Trek regalia, regardless of what future episodes of Renegades morph into. That is my biggest disappointment in all of this.

I just saw a magazine dedicated to the 50th anniversary, and in the end of it, there are 4 pages on fan productions, with full photos and descriptions of NV and of Axanar, but no mention of STC. Is there room here for another "Fuck Axanar?" :P
