STC Ep. 7: "Embrace The Winds" speculation and discussion....

Well, we've only seen the last scene in the script. We have no idea what will happen between episode 7 and then, so there's plenty of uncharted and unknown territory to cross.

Obviously, but choosing the Enterprise entering or within drydock as a final scene is STILL too predictable a play. So sue me, I tend to prefer movies, television or anything written that plows on ahead into unexpected territory.
Here's another one, I'm about ready to bet 50$ (not with everybody, with a buddy of mine who's into Star Trek as well) that before they're done, STC will do a storyline of some sort where Michelle Specht's McKenna will be romantically or (gasp!) sexually involved with Mignona's Kirk. If they even consider pairing Specht up with anybody, they should do the unexpected and join her with somebody like, hmmmm let's say, Scotty!! Now that would be welcome as a bold move...

They went for the most obvious way to end their series. To me that's lazy.

Well, the entire episode is NOT the ship in drydock; there is an entire story. That is just the end cap and really a fitting end. I don't think it's "lazy" to show the end of the 5(0) year mission with the Enterprise in the drydock; it seems appropriate .

^^ It's straightforward fanfic connecting-the-dots. And in no way a believable way TOS would have ended the series simply because they had no inkling TMP would exist ten years down the road.

This right up destroys the illusion of pretending it's 1969/70.

That isn't to say it won't be decent, but it won't feel authentic.

Is that part of the mission statement for STC any more, though? I'm pretty sure they've evolved a bit from that, while still being the closest fan series to the original.

During one of Vic's most recent podcast interviews he refers to wanting to keep the show as close as possible to feeling like the original series. He mentions also trying to not contradict established Trek continuity post TOS and hence the periodic post TOS references.

But candidly this strikes me as arguing with yourself. Do it one way or the other. You can still respect post TOS continuity (if you feel so compelled) without making overt references to said continuity.

Did the Xindi have to be mentioned in "The White Iris?" No--it was a callout moment to no purpose. One could argue the word Xindi could be taken as a throwaway reference to some unseen race EXCEPT we know it's not. Now the reference to Orion history in "Lolani" was done much more subtly.

Granted these are nitpicks and we wouldn't be fans if we didn't discuss them. But when you add up a bunch of references here and there it serves to undermine the illusion you claim to be aiming for.

Now showing the Enterprise in drydock at the end is a truly blatant callout to post TOS continuity. If the illusion was cracked before it now becomes shattered.

But this is all just talk because they cracked the illusion the moment they put a Counselor aboard ship back in the beginning. Michelle Specht is fantastic in the role and she has generally been used to good effect. She has fit in well with the stories they want to tell, but I have a hard time believing a "Counselor" would ever have been part of the TOS crew.


The bottom line, though, is I doubt we will ever see another production--fan or official--that ever comes as close again to recapturing TOS.

It's rare anybody can be able to accvurately recreate a series, be it TOS, TNG or any other. Farragut recreated TAS quite fell in their animated episodes. if it happens it happens

I don't believe the guidelines to be as restrictive as many appear to believe. We'll see, but I don't think STC and the like are done for yet.

Honestly, the STC 'illusion of 1969' was destroyed when they added TNG style elements like a 'Ship's Counselor' and at timmes writing Kirk more as 'Picard in the 23rd century'.

That doesn't mean I hate the STC Ship's Counselor character (I think the actress is good and does a good job); and I've made my own comments about how 'James T. Kirk' has been handled at times; but I still enjoy the series very much and realize that they ARE sticking to their 'vision' of how they feel Season 4 might have gone.

I really do hope they're able to complete the episodes they intended to do in the manner they intended to do them, and I thank them for expanding the 'world' of the TOS era. To this old fan (Age 53) who started watch Star Trek first run during the thrd season (at age 6); and who's seen every TOS episode (even absolute crap like "And the Children Shall Lead") multiple times; my nitpicks aside - it's been a very enjoyable fan produced series to watch, and I thank them all for the hard work they've done in making and releasing it over the last few years.

I like McKennah; I just wished they had called her the ship's psychiatrist due to the stresses of deep space exploration, or some such, and not used the actual term "counselor."

We've got very little to go on yet for "Embracing The Winds."

The title might suggest changes for some or all of the characters. We have two Starfleet Command officers being featured: Commodore Gray and Admiral Stomm. We have Kirk in a dress uniform and Starbase personnel apparently giving some sort of testimony.

There is tons of room for speculation from those bare bones.
