I've never heard anybody argue that Peter Kirk's lines in New Voyages/Phase II should be given to the regular characters, or that he should be canned because he's stealing the spotlight from Scotty, Uhura, Sulu, or Chekov. (Although I never spent much time on the ST:NV chatboards, so it may have happened.)

Folks have complained about Peter Kirk, but I've never seen anyone claim that he fucked his way onto the show. The same goes for Desalle and Cad... hell, I've never seen it for any male fanfilm actor. It seems this particular criticism is reserved for female cast members.

It's very interesting, isn't it.

In fact, I find it a little bit pathetic that kind of implication even has to be brought up. There's a big difference between giving constructive criticism and making a comment on someone's personal relationship.

Did people complain about Seven of Nine having virtually every second story/B-storyline dedicated to her character from Season 4 onwards on Voyager? Was that perhaps because the writers found Seven of Nine a far more interesting character to write for, that her character shook up the dynamic between the original cast members and gave them something new to interact with? Or was it because the actress was in a relationship with the writer?

My own thoughts on Doctor McKennah/Michelle Specht's inclusion into the cast is as followed.
She is a breath of fresh air. Her character is original, perky and probably the best representation of an actual woman that original Star Trek will ever come to. Her presence shakes up the dynamic between the principle characters and gives someone new for them to interact with. Frankly, Specht is a great performer, probably the strongest actor in the series, and it's her honest portrayal of an original character that hooked me from Episode 1.

To be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of original Star Trek and the only reason I watch Continues is for her. Ahaha.

Welllllll, I recall a bit of snark implying that Bobby Rice was added as Peter Kirk because someone had the hots for him. I'm certainly not suggesting that is true, but it was suggested by a few people. That said, generally it IS women who get tarred with "casting couch" accusations.

Definitely NOT where I was going, but I relent. I apologize to all concerned for my choice of words, and I'm moving on.

We might see something of Spock's dissatisfaction where he is contemplating retiring from Starfleet.
Maybe not so much dissatisfaction with Starfleet as a sense of psychic vulnerability from his own emotions, something of which we may have witnessed the awakening in Episode 6.

There was a quoted phrase I read in an article back in '79 referring to Spock's attitude in TMP -- not sure who or what was being quoted -- but the phrase was "with a desire for total insulation from human contact." Maybe this is the direction Spock's deactivation from Starfleet will come from... a perceived need to remove himself from contact with humans and their emotional behavior for his own well-being.

Quite so. As far as I know, Kipleigh Brown's husband has nothing to do with STC.
He'd be great! Emo should be in the next episode.

As far as Peter Kirk in STNV, or STP2, or whatever it's called these days, I dislike the addition because of the age problem. If you recall, Peter was maybe 12 or 13 years old in Operation: Annihilate, so the numbers don't work out. However, George S Kirk had three sons and only Peter was on Deneva, so perhaps an older Kirk nephew would have worked out for STP2. I don't know their names, perhaps they are mentioned in one of the TOS novels, but I'd like to think of them as Sol and Murray Kirk.

Why are people complaining about girlfriends and nepotism?

Three canon characters - Number One, Nurse Chapel and Lwaxana Troi - would never have existed without girlfriends and nepotism...
To say nothing of then-Yeoman Smith! (Though Gene struck out that time...)

GR should've written a book on game.
While not ugly, he wasn't THAT good lookin', and was somewhat of a schlub in his overall appearance.
And yet....

There are a few complaints I've seen in this thread that just leave me scratching my head. This is the strangest. So what if friends and loved ones are cast? Isn't that the point of a fan film? A bunch of friends get together and play Star Trek? If the result is great, awesome. If not, nobody's holding a gun to your head to watch it.

The really big mystery to me is the argument over whether certain effects could have been done in the original series. so what if they couldn't have been? It's 2016, not 1966, and just because this is supposed to be a continuation of that series doesn't mean the effects staff of the continuation should be limited to what was possible for the original effects team. Trek Remastered exists because the people that own the series felt the same way.

and 3.5 from the Russian judge, which I rounded to a 4 :D I agree it was a little long and anticlimactic

Great to see Gigi Hedley (who was wonderful and great seeing her play a different role)

In '74 Good Times hit it dead on with a very young Ms. Janet Jackson being abused by her mother.

but I wonder if it would been so blunt or would of trek veiled it a little.

Also I liked the set up for GE's character being withdrawn and shy, funny how the counselor did not pick up on her issues.

I was happy to see the lower deck crew get more screen time overall, :D but still not a fan of the counselor so the Meckeena and Smith scenes could been cut down or played by Chapel ( I know she is not a regular in their world) and Uhura, or Chekhov, who was literally shut down by Kirk on the bridge when he offered to help.

The monster looked too good, but I am ok with that. Irwin Allen would of killed to get his hands on that costume. The design of the head and back ( cool concept with lighting) kept making think of Ash saying "Usdi I choose you !"

But again overall good job

Here's the uncut engine room fight scene music from act 3. This is in the Alexander Courage style but the begining is a homage to a Sol Kaplan cue from Doomsday Machine.

And here is a generic library music cue I wrote in a style that, to me, is a cross between Gerald Fried and Fred Steiner.

I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank you and the talented Eastman undergrads for another stellar contribution to Star Trek Continues. That final sequence where our heroine was talking to Usdi's father had me in tears. Beautifully done.

Based on the title, I was actually expecting something like this :)(jk). It's interesting that King Ghidora was designed around the same time as Star Trek and the rock creatures looked like they had a 60's Japanese monster movie influence.

When you're a young no name actress in Hollywood looking for exposure (and I mean on the screen TV or otherwise ;)) - and you run into a producer of a TV series who says, "I'll not only put in in an episode, I'll give you a line of dialogue...<-- That works better then 'looks' any day.

GR's 'game' could be summed up as "Hey, I was an executive producer of a Network TV series and I had actresses lining up outside my office and a BIG couch inside..." ;)

Finally had a chance to see the episode. I loved it because it actually had something to say about abuse and parenting. Of course, the script is not completely watertight, wouldn't expect it to be, but overall the script didn't throw me too far out of things. I agree the third act could've used some tightening - the episode felt like it was ending when Usdi and his father moved off, while the ending scene at the cometary cloud seemed overlong. The effects were very nicely done by Doug in this outing, though I still have some qualms about that push-in shot from the cold open. I think it stands among STC's best work, and I'm still content to say I think of this as my personal canonic version of season 4 - as much as it may rankle a couple people in this thread.

Perhaps the last act wouldn't have seemed so drawn-out if they'd structured it differently, not showing Usdi and his father moving off when they did, since that really did feel like an ending. That in turn made the scenes afterward feel like a double or even triple epilogue. Not sure what they'd have had to do to avoid that impression, though.

In the same context, going and tracking down the creatures in the comet cloud to let Eliza talk to them seems like putting the ship in unnecessary danger, something Kirk wouldn't have done just to give a better speech. The threat to the ship is gone, "let's get the hell out of here," is more like it. If you're a Doctor Who fan, it's like when Rory says, "Did he just bring them back? Did he just save the world from aliens and then bring all the aliens back again?"
