But it takes me out of the story.. Let's say that I see a Who fan film with the Second Doctor and they start shoehorning in references to the Time War.. It wouldn't feel right

For me, these guys have become the characters and imo, the only one who approaches parody is Grant - he is doing a voice impression and he appears to struggle with it. He would be much more believable if he relaxed and used his own voice. I've totally bought Vic, Todd, and of course Chris and of what little I've seen of this ep, Chris is totally channeling his dad. Prior to this he went in and out of the accent, but based on the teaser , I think he's finally nailing it. Chuck Huber is also growing on me as McCoy, although he's not quite there yet.

If you have seen the episode and you did not like the performances of the main characters (Vic, Todd, Chris), you never will IMO.

Agreed.

For me a mental test is whether I could see the original cast doing and saying the things we see the STC cast saying and doing. It usually works except when there is dialogue that strikes me as out of character.

I think it works too but this is just nitpicking and not hating the overall work. These projects are fine... as a fanfilm venture.

We get to see STC's newly built Engineering set in this episode and it looks nice. That said I must say I always liked those huge hunks of machinery we saw in TOS' first season Engineering set on the opposite side from the familiar control panels. We saw them in "The Enemy Within" and "Court Martial." I thought they made the set feel more complete so in my mind Engineering was really a composite of what we saw in first and second season.

Seeing it being constructed was a goosebump moment for me to see on video. The craft is outstanding and I might say looks better than TOS version. I have a question for you Warped9, is the Engineering room we see from the 3rd season an extension from the 1st season or a complete refit?

The second season Engineering is a real expansion of the first season version. And the third season expands a bit more on that I believe. But there is a lot more similarity between the second and third season than with the first season.

The second and third season engine room were essentially the same. Each episode slight changes were made for story purposes but the set remained the same.

The set was rebuilt for the second season, almost entirely. Feek can correct or elaborate, but the only common thing between the two sets is the hex grid and the engines behind it. (The control panel Riley spills milk on was moved to a new alcove by the entrance, but the rest of the control panels were rebuilt---bits of leftover season 1 control panels ended up in Auxiliary Control.) Added were the upper level, and the dilithium chamber in the middle of the floor. The big pieces of machinery were seen only one more time, I think.

(post crossed with feek's)

And in "Day of the Dove," of course.

What's funny is late in the episode when they're laughing at the alien, they're ostensibly in the same spot, but there's just gray wall behind them. :)

I think there is a lingering sense of wanting to "improve" on something they like. But if you want it to be as close as possible to the original then such "improvements" have to be set aside.

Re: Vic's performance.

I've said this before and I'll say it again, he's certainly charismatic in the role. He has presences and it feels as if he owns the scenes he is in. That being said, Vic is prone to channeling a little too much Shatner in his performance. It smacks of too much imitation and not bringing enough of himself to the performance.

Whereas, Chris Pine puts just a touch of Shatner in his performance — the way he holds himself or the twinkle in his eye. However, Pine makes Kirk very much his own. With Vic, you can see he's performing Shatner performing Kirk.

One thing I will say and I've said it elsewhere, Todd Haberkorn is the better of the fan film Spocks.

Ryan, the imitation of Shatner is clearly a performance of choice, Vic is a strong actor and he has lots of range. What do you think?

I already stated most of what I think in my previous post. However, I'll agree it's an acting choice.

A choice I don't totally agree with. Because the danger is slipping into parody. Vic straddles that line for me in his performance.

As for Vic's range, I've heard a few of his voice performances. And that's all I'll say.

YMMV
