News Stay At Home With ULTRAMAN| Ultra Science Fiction Hour on YouTube

I thought about starting back there too, but I decided I felt more like going with something more modern.

We're back to chronicling the adventures of Ultraman Zero, with the second part of the serialization of "Ultraman Saga":

Edit: Appears they forgot the English subs again.
Still no English subs for that episode. but for the newly uploaded third part of the "Ultraman Saga" serialization.

I just finished watching Ultraman X (I love these affordable Mill Creek Blu-ray sets). It was pretty good, with some cool fights and decent characters. It was a lot more episodic then the first Ultraman I finished, Geed, and it had maybe a few too many bad filler episodes, along with two recap episodes, but overall I enjoyed it. It doesn't beat Geed by any stretch, I liked that shows characters better, and I liked that it had more of a plot. I'd probably put X a little below Ultraman Z (based on how Z has been so far), but still definitely worth watching if you like Ultraman.

Next up, I'm watching the Ultraman x movie, which was apparently released on the 50th anniversary of the original Ultraman series, and it has the original Ultraman appear. After that, I'll probably go to Orb since I have that Blu-ray set.

Episode #32 of "Ultraman 80", freshly uploaded today, was a tribute to a classic "UltraSeven" episode also featuring a robotic ship as the kaiju:

I guess we're getting two uploads on Thursdays/Fridays (depending on your time zone) for a while, as once more, it is one episode, #10 today, of "Ultraman: Towards the Future":

And one episode, #2 today, of "Gridman Hyper Agent":

Instead of a regular episode, this week Tsuburaya presents us with the second "special episode" (meaning a pure clip show) of "Ultraman Z":

The series will continue in its regular format with episode #20 next week.

Today's "Ultraman Z Boost Program" (without a proper episode of Z this past weekend) calls back on one of the kaijus in the previous week's episode, Bemstar. In episode #18 of "Return of Ultraman", we're also treated to guest star UltraSeven:

Today's "Ultraman Max" episode #19 features hints at an ancient visit of Max to Earth, android Elly going kick-ass, and a guest appearance by Kohji Moritsugu (but not as Dan Moroboshi):

For the second time in three weeks, Tsuburaya didn't put up English subtitles for "Ultraman Zero: The Chronicles" (even though the video title says they're available). For most of the Ultra shows, it would be a little annoying, but for a serialization of the Zero movies, it sucks big time. But, for those who want to try without the subs, here is episode #10:

But, at least, English subs are available pretty reliably with the other regular upload series. As with today's "Ultraman 80" episode #33:

Anyone else watching Ultra Q? Episode 6 is one of the wildest things I've ever seen. Striking, cinematic direction with lots of dynamic camera moves, but a totally bizarre story (inspired by the Urashima Taro myth that crops up a lot in tokusatsu) that blurs a child's daydreams and reality in a Calvin and Hobbes-like fashion, so that it's unclear how much of it actually happened. It doesn't even have a giant monster per se, and the leads are hardly in it.

I'm wondering just how anthology-like this show will turn out to be. Both 5 and 6 depart from focus on the usual cast, with only the main lead appearing in episode 5 alongside an otherwise new set of characters. They're definitely going for a Twilight Zone/Outer Limits vibe, yet with a regular core cast (that just coincidentally gets drawn into one giant-monster story after another). But there's been less emphasis on that cast in the past couple of episodes, so I wonder if that will continue.

Tsuburaya wanted to do a Twilight Zone/Outer Limits-like anthology series, but the TV station wanted giant monsters. I'm not sure whether the TV station also demanded the regular characters, or if that was something Tsuburaya was going to do anyway.

In any event, after a while the show had established itself enough as a success for Tsuburaya and his writing staff to do the occasional story not focused on the regular cast and without giant monsters. Anybody remember that movie "Downsizing" with Matt Damon? There's an episode of Ultra Q with that exact same premise.
But the majority of episodes still feature the lead characters prominently, and do feature a monster (though not always a giant one).

Anyway, it's intriguing how different Ultra Q is from the Ultraman formula that evolved from it. Although I can see how an element of it survived. Toei superhero shows tend to have a single villain organization throughout a whole series, but the Ultra franchise (the parts I've seen, anyway) is more episodic, with threats coming from a range of different sources so you get a wide variety of stories -- evil monsters, benevolent monsters, silly monsters, weird monsters, etc. So some of that "anthology with continuing characters" format endured.

Well, it looks like Tsuburaya uploaded another "Ultraman - Towards the Future" episode today, but only for Japanese viewers.
The other upload of today, episode #3 of "Gridman", is available, though:

And, yes, apparently the TV series "Ultraman Max" exists in-universe of "Ultraman Max".

This week's episode of "Ultraman Zero: The Chronicles" has English subs again, so for those who are still following this:

Found this music video of the Japanese band MAYDAY for their song "Life of Planet" (yeah, Japanese, alright), starring the rather obscure Ultraman Neos:

Neos is one of the few I've seen, since I started with Tiga and have been going forward from there, though I couldn't find Gaia and skipped straight from Dyna to Neos, which was a short direct-to-video season. It wasn't very good.
