Status Quo complaints everywhere

I think TNG was fine with being episodic and static for the time it was made in. It had some loose continuity even in Season 1, like Q returning in "Hide and Q" or the flashback interrogation scenes from "Coming of Age." I like that this carried over in things like Worf's Klingon story or the Borg encounters. But I don't think it's bad that it didn't make huge changes in style and story over the 7 years like DS9. I have occasionally plotted out that kind of stuff for TNG as an alternate universe, like Picard getting removed as a main character from the series after BOBW2 and Riker being Captain, or everyone getting their own ship in Redemption II and it staying that way for the rest of the series, or there being a Season 8 at the same time as Generations and some cast not returning. And that's fine in this fanwank alternate universe way but not something I'd ever wanted or needed from the real series. They're just fun thought experiments.

With episodic series you get more different kind of stories while with ongoing storyline you follow one story and episodes are "details" of that story ? ?

Obviously it depends on what kind of series we're talking about.

Thinking about it, the whole uniform and rank pips and etc. things could have made for an interesting episode or two where differences between and opinions of the crews could have been explored much better.
A major flaw in Voyager, for me, is the apparent assumption that they are all ex-Starfleet. Chakotay was a Commander, Torres a cadet, Seska a something (she puts all that effort into infiltrating Starfleet and then the Maquis, only to...). But many of Chakotay's crew would be DMZ colonists who'd never been in Starfleet, and never wanted to be.

I watched it once on original run. So, I don't really remember. I like episodic, but my hunch is it could've used a shakeup. Essentially the same show in s7 as in s3, yes? (characters/positions)?

I'm watching DS9 with my dear wife, almost done, and I'm liking Ezri a lot (she's way deeper than the pixie dream girl I thought I remembered) and Vic Fontaine is great. Good example of a shakeup. IMHO
