STARTREKHISTORY.COM UPDATED 07-04-12

Thanks again for the wonderful site, Curt. It really takes me back to read the great interview w/ Bjo. I remember a band teacher in 7th grade had some of the clips he bought from Lincoln, and brought them in to show us.

Doug

Nice, thanks. I met Bjo at a con in Winnipeg, many years ago - she was pleasant and patient with everyone's questions. She sat down on a chair, and started knitting (or some such thing) and had everyone who was interested in listening just sit down in a semi-circle around her. She just started chatting and questions where tossed in here and there. Fond memories.

Just amazing! When I think that there is nothing else to draw from the well, Curt and Dave manage to not only surprise but knock our starfleet insignia-ed socks off!

I'd love all this in a glossy coffee table book.

If only CBS would approach the guys and make them an offer(!)

I had never seen pictures of the wiring on the left side of the 11-foot model. Not sure if that was part of the recent update but very nice. Also it is amazing looking at the setup to make the nacelle caps function. I have the Round 2 1:350 scale TOS Enterprise on pre-order and can't wait to get it.

The lighting kit for the upcoming model (as well as the system used in the "Master Replicas" version) are closely based upon the arrangement used in the 11 foot filming miniature. 10 LEDs (as opposed to the teardrop holiday bulbs) randomly blink as a motor rotates an inner hemisphere of 12 opaque "blades".

Master Replicas ultimately decided that blinking lights by themselves just couldn't replicate the effect as depicted in the show. So a motor assembly was included.

Sincerely,

Bill

Thanks, Redfern, for the info on that lighting kit. Will that be done by Round 2, or another company? Steve over at Culttvman.com mentioned that alighting kit would be coming out but I was not sure who was making it and how to get one. I believe the 1:350 kit is scheduled for release in October. I saw one auction on eBay that said the lighting kit for the 1:350 TMP version would work in the new TOS release, too. Any idea on that?

As I understand it (and I'll admit I could be mistaken) Round2 themselves will be selling the lighting kit. I signed up for the special "newsletter" (getting a free T-shirt in the deal) and some of the "behind the scenes" shots demonstrated how the LEDs would fit into the "side" of clear plastic pieces that in turn pop into a section of portholes. the whole grouping is illuminated through a "light-bar" effect.

Not too much was shown about the nacelle domes. At the time of that particular newsletter, the design team had not yet decided upon traditional "bell" shaped LEDs or rectangular LEDs with a beveled face.

One major caveat. The designers have opted to have a recessed "deflector" grid upon the saucer (similar in concept of the TMP version). Yes, it resulted in an uproar from some quarters, with fans reminding Round2 Matt Jefferies "penciled in" a grid only at the insistence of Roddenberry, lines so faint they wouldn't register on camera. Round2 claims the grid will assist with the alignment of of the decals and it will be easier for builders who don't want them to fill them than it will be manually scribe them if they were not present and desired. Round2 claims they will be very, very thin and shallow, minute enough that a reasonable coat of paint will fill them.

Will shall see.

Sincerely,

Bill

Curt, did you ever receive the email that I sent? It was quite important in regard to all of the material that I shared with you.
