Goodbye from the STARTREK.COM Team

Sadly, we must report that CBS Interactive organization is being restructured, and the production team that brings you the STARTREK.COM site has been eliminated. Effective immediately.

We don't know the ultimate fate of this site, which has served millions of Star Trek fans for the last thirteen years.

If you have comments, please send them to editor @ startrek.com - we hope someone at CBS will read them.

Thank you for your loyal fandom over the years. It has been a pleasure to serve you.

Is it a joke?

Re: STARTREK.COM shutdown

With CBS-es recent near fanatisism over Trek it seems unlikely they will let the site totally crash, it will probably stay around, in some form or another.

Re: STARTREK.COM shutdown

I might would have added a "?" to the thread title personally. The team have been axed. It doesn't mention that ST.com is going down too, only that the team behind it didn't know what was going to happen to it. It may stay the way it is, with just someone else handling it, or (i hope not) it gets incorporated into CBS.com's site (i.e. cbs.com/startrek.)

If only it were.

Hard to believe, Star Trek will soon have no official site on the web. That's quite a feat in this age of alternative media.

Re: STARTREK.COM shutdown

An extract from my email to Star Trek.com.

Dear CBS,

So here we are at last. 2008 and the triumphant return of Star Trek, and where is this franchise’s presence on the web? Nowhere, that’s where!

Yet again we’re treated to another truly astounding executive decision. Congratulations. I’m amazed this can happen today, as more and more desert TV and Film in favour of spending their free time on the web.

I offer a toast to my favourite franchise this Christmas, because despite inept decisions such as killing off all-new TV episodes from Enterprise and plundering the vaults in order to sell off set pieces during its anniversary, the fans ultimately have more confidence in Star Trek than you do.
Be sure to make your voice heard too.

Re: STARTREK.COM shutdown

Mostly likey it will will be cbs.com/startrek or something with StarTrek.com pointing to that and have it run by the CBS site people. Still though I know Dave,Tim and Mark and feel really bad about this.

Unlucky time for sites, my servers hdd is having failure so most of my sites (on sig below) are down for weekend as the hard drive is getting replaced.

Re: STARTREK.COM shutdown

I'll lay money on the current site being replaced with a movie site for the Abrams film. Since the new movie is just 'Star Trek' it may just be they want the domain for that.

Re: STARTREK.COM shutdown

I hope Paramount does take it over. At least they're doing something and trying to get it right this time.

Re: STARTREK.COM shutdown

FYI: as of 12:00 pm EST the forum on StarTrek.com has now been disabled.

Also this is from CBS:

“In order to generate ubiquitous synergies, grow global e-services, and transition e-business channels, CBS/Paramount has decided to discontinue Star Trek.com at this time. As we harness visionary architectures, we also target customized web-readiness in order to drive scalable partnerships that will allow us to better embrace world-class bandwidth. In the spirit of Gene Roddenberry’s vision, please visualize scalable e-commerce that will optimize sticky channels, and will ultimately incubate cross-media convergence, and facilitate synergistic interfaces, in anticipation of the re-launch of our beloved Trek.”

Re: STARTREK.COM shutdown

They fired they for supporting the writers strike "Star Trek Day".

And the CEO is getting paid shitloads of money, even for a CEO, so it's not in order to save money.

Okay, I'm really sure the ordinary web user is going to understand all of that. Just sounds like a bunch of doubletalking B.S. to me. This is what happened = The ST.com team wasn't financial viable for CBS, they got rid of them or took them elsewhere in the corporation. One of CBS's New Media will take it over, it will be something different than what it once was.

Re: STARTREK.COM shutdown

we maybe seeing the problem of having trek spilt among two different companies.

Dealing with these type people, we'll need the Binford 2000 version.
