Started "Borderlands"

So I just started playing Borderlands tonight! I've been looking forward to this game for a long time. Ever since the first Game Informer preview of it, it sounded like a really fun game. Plus when it got the cell-shading graphics that was even better! I also hear great things about Claptrap.

I played it for about 45 minutes tonight. I got to the point where you're doing little things for Doctor Zed (next up kill 8 bandits).

I don't know if it's because it's the beginner's rifle, but the aiming in this game is atrocious. I'm playing the main soldier character and I can't hit the broadside of a barn with my rifle! Please tell me this situation rapidly improves.

Also I was running out of health extremely fast! I just got the shield and can buy healing packs so that should help I suppose.

Also I was very confused about if and when my game was being saved. They explained those posts you walk up to that will resurrect you when killed (like Bioshock's vita chambers). But is my game being saved at those places? Do I have to interact with them or just walk up to them? Routinely a small triangle would appear in my upper right corner than go away; was that the game saving? When I hit exit game, it apparently THEN saved my game; was that the first point my game was saved? I'm just terrified my game is going to freeze and I'm gonna lose an hour of progress or something!

I hated this game and managed to sell it on ebay for what I paid for it. The aiming never got better and what really ticked me off was "respawning" enemies. There was one level where I was in a building and I finally fought my way to the objective. As I exited the building, all the enemies I killed as I was fighting to enter the building were all back and I had to kill them all in order to get away. I wasted most of my ammo and died plenty of times before I just gave up and sold it.

You really need other people to have fun with the game. It's sort of like a first person Diablo. Get other people to play with you and it becomes alot of fun.

Alas, this the game I bought to play while my GF went home for a week :p Besides, she never wants to play games anymore anyway :sob:

Can you play it co-op with two controllers on one 360? I don't have XBL.

It is better online. However, playing online presents a few problems.

What can happen is when you join people, they will very rarely be at the same point in the game as you. Often they will be ahead of you in some way. The problem with this is you inherit their quests. So you will suddenly have all these quests that you haven't even got to yet appear in your active quest log.

To avoid this, I recommend either hosting yourself in order to complete all your own quests, or if you wish to join someone make sure they are close to your level and on the same playthrough as you.

Another problem I've encountered via online play is occaisonally quests will become broken, either temporarily or, seemingly, permanently. This can be frustrating.

It seems certain quests are more prone to this than others. One I had trouble with is the 'Buy a Shield' quest early on in Playthrough 2. I think it had something to do with the fact that I already had a shield (of course, obtained during playthrough 1). It kept telling me to 'Return to Zed' to turn in, but when I did Zed wouldn't talk to me. There are a couple of annoyances like this, but none have been completely gamebreaking.

If you have the General Knox add on, there is a glitch during the Armory Assualt mission that sometimes people use to gain unlimited looting time which can break the quest for the host. It's really annoying, but you can fix it by joining someone else who has not yet completed that quest.

Aiming and health do improve massively as you level up. You'll also find shields that regenerate your health a bit later in the game.

Yeah I got the first shields now. I killed the first boss, Nine Toes Three Dicks, LOL. I love those movie style introductions. I'm having a really hard time hitting those skrags because they run up to me and I can't track them, grr.

Ugh, I'm not a fan of the way this game handles. It's so hard to hit anything, and I hate the way that the skrags just run right up to your feet where you can't see them or hit them and pound away at you. Also I hate that there's no difficulty setting... I keep getting my ass kicked, and there's nothing I hate more than dying over and over again.

OK I finally figured it out. Whenever the little triangle in the upper right corner appears the game is being saved. It appears to happen whenever you come within sight of the green pole things. And then if you die, you restart next to the nearest one, and they charge you like $300 (does this number increase with your level and/or the number of times you die?), and the ammo you spent on your last life is still gone apparently.

Despite the game's flaws, IMO, it's a lot of fun. Okay, I don't know how far you are into the game, but I'll assume it's near the beginning. I don't know which tips to give, so I'm going to give all I can think of. Hope some of them helps.

- I haven't played in a while. I don't remember how much they charge you for bringing you back. And yes, the ammo and grenades you used are gone. Oh yeah, there is split-screen co-op.

- The beginning of the game is tough because your weapons really, really suck. Need to get better guns as soon as you can. Also, you need good shields and grenades. As soon as you do, the game gets a lot better. Keep an eye out for sheilds with fast health regeneration.

- While humans weak spots are their heads, skag dogs' heads and front legs are armored. Their weak points are their back and weakest points are their mouths. Shoot them when they howl for quickest kills. There will be more variety of enemies coming up later, some with varying weak points.

- Explore your surroundings. Good way to get cash and score good weapons/items. Some enemies respawn too, so always be aware of your environment.

- (This tip is only useful at the start of the game). You can get a different starting weapon. Let's say you're playing Roland, but hate his starting rifle and prefer a shotgun. Start a co-op with Brick as a second player. Have Brick drop his gun and get Roland to pick it up. Save. Then continue your game with Roland with a shotgun. Delete Brick.

- As soon as you get your special ability at level 10, use it. They are very useful in tough spots, especially Roland's turret gun. Upgrade your talent trees when you can.

- Use vehicles to take out tougher enemies.

- Beware of enemies labeled 'Badass'. They are a lot tougher than normal.

- After you save the Claptraps, some of them will lead you to good guns and items.

I'm a Level 13 now and every single battle with a group of enemies leaves me nearly dead or dead. I think i just suck at this game

And then if you die, you restart next to the nearest one, and they charge you like $300 (does this number increase with your level and/or the number of times you die?)

The number can hit 5 digits later on. It's a percentage of the money you have, if I'm not mistaken.

If you don't mind breaking the progression, try jumping into someone's high level game and just get free levels. The game just became hilarious once I did that. :lol

The gear you get at the start is junk. And I wouldn't bother buying any weapons from the merchants unless you are desperate - the stuff you find out in the wasteland will be way better than anything they are offering.

Ammo becomes less of a problem as you go (there are shitloads around), and if you eventually get the right player mod (kind of a class specialisation item thingy you'll get later) you may actually regenerate ammo or some ammo types.

The respawning of mobs doesn't bother me, since I figure it gives me both extra xp and loot. Once the vehicles are open to you the respawned mobs are less of a problem, since you'll just bypass 90% of them.

If you can, get a weapon with some elemental damage on it - it makes a huge difference.

I've only tried playing as Soldier & Hunter, but Soldier was the easiest. Roland's sentry gun seems to me to be possibly the best special ability in the game. I built mine up to be a superweapon - it was literally stronger than I was. Mordecai's sniper and gunslinger abilities are nice too, but his pet bird leaves a lot to be desired imo. The soldier is a better all-rounder and easier to solo with - while Mordecai on the other hand is more delicate, though he does better damage, so he's more of a specialist who is better in a group than on his own.

I'm at Level 17 now I think and I'm at the boss fight with Sledge. Brilliant ass that I am, I flicked off the light switch that just happens to also turn off the 360 after I died the first two times at that fight

I'm not truly enjoying the game... it's too hard. And I love sniping but I have a REALLY hard time hitting anything that moves. I wish I bought Crackdown 2 instead I know I would have loved that; the first one is my all time favorite sheer stupid fun game :D

OK I was a hair's breath away from throwing the game away in disgust. I had to replace the entire ****ing mine level to get back to Sledge  And then I couldn't beat him after like five tries  But I finally managed to kill him, barely. This game is too damn hard! But I'm past him so I guess I'm forced to keep playing :p

Join someone else's game and soak up some experience. Most high levels don't mind because they are looting for gear anyway.

I'm not on XBL. The game is slowly getting less annoying. I'm level 22 now, I have a rocket launcher, I got a class mod, and this area (Dahl something) is a big open area you can use your vehicle in. I just beat Mad Mel (another incredibly frustrating battle, I died like six times).
