Starship Exeter themes

Vice Admiral
I was wandering around the web and found the blog for the composer of the excellent Starship Exeter theme. He had a you tube of it up and a surprise bonus, a you tube of the ORIGINAL Exeter theme that they didn't use. Don't ask me why, it's as good as if not better than the one they went with...

Anyways, does anyone have either or both themes in MP3 up somewhere? The 2nd theme was available on the old message board site for some time, but got the site got taken down.

After listening to both, I think I like the one they went with better. The intro on the unused version was more intriguing, but the main theme for Exeter has always been one of my favorite fan film themes.

The main theme that Jimm went with is built around a phrase lifted from "Mudd's Women." I like it a great deal.

It should be noted that Stan's note about the creation of the visuals for the title sequence is entirely wrong - I've posted a blog entry there about it, but that's "awaiting moderation."

The "fans in Minnesota" with a "high quality effects company" that he refers to would be Minnefex, and they did a great deal of really first-class work on the show - things like the fantastic, near-perfect engine room miniature, other miniature sets, props and set pieces among other things.

Minnefex did not, however, create the CG sequences of ships in space used throughout the show. I did that, and later Neo-FX did a lot of the work on Acts 3 and (it's coming, it's coming) Act 4. I created the opening title sequence entirely in Lightwave and edited it in AfterEffects - the only editing I did on the show.

I like them both. The theme Jimm went with has an edge in that it's already "imprinted" itself on the mind as the Exeter theme, but it could as easily been the first one as far as I'm concerned.

Dennis, do those themes exist anywhere currently as downloadables?

Dennis how did the full orchestration come about? Excelsior has an original theme, but it's obviously synthesized and we'd love the richer sound like Exeter's theme brings.

The first theme sounds like someone trying to play the Star Trek theme without playing it. It's rather formless and has no strong melody. The final theme, while I don't adore it, is a step up.

I'd have liked to hear what episode composer Ben Jasmine would have come up with.

^ You can easily make mp3s out of any YouTube video using a video-to-mp3 converter.

Cool! Didn't know you could do that!

I'm not Dennis, but IIRC it's not a real orchestra. It's a really good synth SAMPLE of an orchestra, instrument by instrument.

That's more and more how TV soundtracks are done these days anyways.

Back on the subject of the themes themselves...the only thing I'd've liked to hear in the original theme would be the final restatement of the main melody after the bridge. You can tell that's where it wants to go but it was cut straight to the crescendo.
