Stars you can't believe are no longer with us

It's an odd thing, but for some reason I really struggle to believe that Farrah Fawcett is no longer with us. As a kid I couldn't decided who I loved more, Lee Majors as the Six Million Dollar Man or his wife as Jill Munroe in Charlie's Angles. The two of them had a massive impact on my childhood. Last night for reasons I can't recall I Googled images of the lovely Farrah, and it just seemed impossible that she was no longer with us, alive and youthful.

Are there any celebrities that you find it hard to believe are no longer with us? Singers, or actors who are fond of and whose passing it's hard to get a handle on?

The other day, I was visiting my dad and he was, as he is wont to do, watching "the Dirty Dozen" when it shows up on cable.

He mentioned to me "is Lee Marvin still alive?"

I replied I assumed he had to be dead given that he was a WWII vet and there are so few of them left in any circumstance.

We went online and found out Marvin passed away approximately twenty-seven years ago.

Agreed about Farrah. I was just watching Cannonball Run the other day and she was so young and beautiful at the time. Even in the 90's, or whenever it was she did the Playboy spread, she was still gorgeous.

As a 10 year old in 1976, I had a massive crush on her, even though I wouldn't have known what to do about it.

Phillip Seymore Hoffman and Heath Ledger

Hoffman was a total surprise, considering apparently he had a role in Hunger Games that would carry forward to the final two movies and I didn't know he was ill. Also, while I thought Capote was boring, Hoffman was great in that movie.

As for Ledger, man was his star on the rise. Yeah you had Dark Knight (Which I still think Killed him more than the Drugs did), but one of the more quirky movies that I liked was A Knight's Tale, and he was a co-star for Brokeback Mountain. I wonder what he could have become had he still been alive and how many more awards he could have won. It's a missed opportunity that we couldn't continue to see him grow and develop as an actor, especially after his amazing performance as The Joker.

Phil Hartman. I remember being so stunned when I heard that he died. And the way he went was so tragic. I personally thought he was on his way to being a comedy legend. He was fantastic on SNL, I loved the voices he did on The Simpsons and he was one of the best parts of Newsradio. His filmography was a little sketchy, but television is where he really shined. From everything I've heard about the man outside of his work he was very beloved and a real pleasure to work with. To have his life ended so early in a murder-suicide is terrible.

Johnny Carson. He was my grandparents' age range, so it's no surprise, but it somehow it felt like "something not right with the world" when he died. And I still feel that way a little.

I have more of a problem with stars that I can't believe are alive. The other day somebody mentioned Jim Nabors being in the news, and I had to look it up because I could have sworn he died years and years ago.

Abe Vigoda would be my first choice for that. He seemed really old on Barney Miller, 40 years ago. Still, I'm glad he's still kickin'

On the actual topic, this will sound bad, but Gerald Ford must have died during a busy week for me...I went for a couple of years without realizing that he had died at all until I had reason to look it up.

On the opposite topic...Don Rickles would be another good example that came up for me relatively recently.

I loved Newsradio. It hurt me when Hartman died.

Not exactly a case of I can't believe they're gone, but I still can't believe it's been over ten years since both Johnny Cash and Warren Zevon died.

And it about five years, Elvis will have been dead longer than he was alive.

Brittany Murphy. It feels like we're just waiting for another one of her cute romantic comedies to come out any day now.

Juliet Prowse, the tall dancer/actress with the amazing legs. I always liked her and still find it hard to believe she passed away in 1996, eleven days shy of her 60th birthday, from pancreatic cancer.

The same for actress Susan Oliver, who also left us much too soon.

I still can't believe John Ritter is gone. I loved so many of his TV shows and movies, starting with Three's Company as a kid up to Bad Santa. He was just such an immense talent and seemed like an amazing person off camera.

He never seemed to age either. He looked almost the same near the end as he did in a 1972-73 MASH episode he was in.
