Stark Contrasts Between DS9 & Voyager

Photon

Commodore
Commodore
An example:

Lets just take DS9's opening in S4

Oct 2 gave Trekkies everywhere-Way of the Warrior, Pts 1 and 2

on Oct 2, Voyager game us the very underappreciated and spine-tingling....
Twisted

on Oct 9 DS9 gave us The Visitor while Voyager gave us the sublime-Partuition

Amazing that DS9 could stay on against such stiff competition.

DS9 and Voyager were not beating each other up.

Example, Enterprise was out there alone and it did not last long.

Hah, not really.

VOY had a slew of annoying characters, DS9 had some likable ones for everyone. Torres had an attitude problem, 7 of 9's clothes were just stupid, Kim was annoying, Paris was annoying, Chakotay was good but better in a crisis, Kes and Neelix were just... :cardie:

DS9 was able to be interesting while barely moving. It had a newly liberated planet with tensions with its neighbours trying to rebuild, and join the Federation. There were tensions with the Klingons, the introduction of a Warship, the Borg, infiltrations at SFC, the Dominion- up against an enemy you had to defeat- the Jem'Hadar were ruthless, but they were also intellegent, complex, and enslaved! A lot of fun, a lot of adventure, some drama...

I'm amazed DS9 didn't outlive VOY.

I remember when both were on at the same time and I would watch them both and swtiching mindsets if you will from DS9 to Voyager.

Did DS9 have consistently better ratings than voyager?

Sorry to say Voyager had better ratings than DS9. The problem I had with DS9 was that it was on the 10pm death time and Voyager was on from as early as 8pm and 9pm with some changes to the line up.

The other problem, TNG and Voyager had reruns on Sunday and DS9 did not run reruns of early seasons during the current season.

Y'all turn on your sarcasm meters:guffaw: Anyway I agree w/everything said, except for 7's uniform, I thought tit was very form fitting and interesting.:alienblush:

Neelix and Paris were so annoying. Just one time I wanted the Alpha Neelix to stand up and Janeway-you drink too much coffee and you're a psycho bitch. Tell Tuvok-STFU. Tell Paris-you're a dumbass. Tell 7 and Kes-my room ladies for a menage a trois NOW!

I guess I could watch more of VOY so I'd know the episodes better and then pick up the meanings of these jokes ( :p) ... but I usually end up :cardie:

I watched them at some point I think, esp. the Hirogen, and 8472... but in general just... what were they doing???? Just... argh...

Ed- I just read about Twisted in MA... :cardie:

Marie, I did manage to sit (squirm) through all 7 seasons on Spike. FTMP, they sucked hard. Occasionally there was a good one. The whole thing w/the Hirogen was horrible. If the series had been good as the opening credit's theme-it would have been as good as DS9

I like the Hirogen kinda... though the hunt is dumb and they're like wimpy Predators (from Predator)... I just found that some of the individuals had character, like that technician...

Growing up in the Springfield/Hartford area, DS9 was always aired on FOX. I guess that had something to do with it.

VOY was the only Trek series I watched all the way through first run, so I have a special love for it, even though it is dopey sometimes. I always liked DS9 a lot more, and always wondered why more of the serialised storytelling couldn't take place on VOY.

VOY had plenty of good episodes, but it struggled with consistency. Consistency with characters, consistency with backstory, consistency in story quality...

I don't really think it is fair to compare the two to be honest. It's like comparing Gore Vidal to a kid that likes eating pennies.

Whenever this topic comes up, I think back to "Fascination" with Lwaxana Troi (God bless you, Majel). It's a light hearted episode with a bit of whimsy and a touch of camp, and it's not exactly the best episode of DS9 ever. Still, the plot revolves around something fairly harmless and the writing has a bit of patience to it, calmly letting the characters act goofy at times while others try to keep things together, because some characters are hit with a massive love bug and Sisko must figure out how to get everyone back to normal. The big revelation at the end is that, well, Lwaxana has something to do with it all (very innocently, of course), and everyone has a good time in the end.

I mention that episode because while my friend and I were watching it, a comment was made that how, if this episode were for Voyager instead, the ship would come very close to blowing up, there'd be sparks all over the place, and everything would be "do or die" in the last five minutes in what would otherwise be a decent character-oriented episode. In other words, a climax that doesn't fit the story or the rhythm would make everything contrived and and feel very manufactured.

Or that other one with Lwaxana...

Odo: Every 17 hours, I turn into a liquid!!
Lwaxana: I can swim.

TNG and DS9 were syndicated while Voyager was on UPN and all three were put into second run syndication after three seasons, DS9 just didn't last long in second run syndication nation wide.

And DS9's ratings were slightly higher than Voyager's during the years they concurrently.

I believe this is incorrect. There is a poster who posts graphs of the original airings ratings on this site from time to time, and IIRC DS9 always got better ratings than Voyager to the tune of a couple of million (ie: ENT's entire audience :p).

Would be nice to see that graph again in this thread to refresh everyone's memory and/or show them the ratings for the first time if they didn't see them before.

As for the thread topic: it's like night and day. Or more aptly: a glorious night to be remembered forever and a really horrible, meaningless day that feels like it's going on forever and is never going to end.

Comparing syndication and network ratings is pretty inaccurate. Besides, Voyager-- airing on a failed upstart network-- would have been available to far fewer viewers than DS9. DS9 would have been available several airings per episode across multiple channels.
