Stargazer series with Young Picard

As I recall, there was no other ship between the Stargazer and the Enterprise. But that would leave about a 9-10 year gap between the Battle of Maxia and Encounter at Farpoint. I checked out Memory Alpha, which says this:

So, maybe there was another ship?
Yeah, that would be my question.

From TNG "Legacy":

PICARD: Let me tell you about your sister. The first time I saw Tasha Yar, she was making her way through a Carnelian mine field to reach a wounded colonist. Her ship had responded to their distress call, as had mine. When it was all over, I requested that she be assigned to the Enterprise. Her ship's captain owed me a favour.

Obviously at the time, Picard was referring to the Enterprise when he states 'as had mine.' AGT shows that this was not the case, as he and Tasha came aboard the Enterprise-D for the first time together. So he context of the line changed. So what ship was he on when he met Tasha at Carnel? And was he the captain, or just a passenger?

In the now defunct Litverse continuity, Picard spent the interim decade between losing the Stargazer and taking command of the Enterprise D at a desk job. The incident at the Carnelian minefield where he first meets Tasha rescuing a wounded colonist was during a mission where Picard was travelling with a task force, of which the ship Tasha served on at the time was part of.
