Starfleet Infantry Ideas...

An fanart project I've thought up today is a dedicated infantry force attached to the regular Starfleet that is seperate from Starfleet crew and is a pure infantry force that is not fully dependent on Starfleet support in operations. It could be similar or be a successor/relative to ENT's MACOs teams, but much more fleshed out. Since this is a Starfleet military force deployed from space they're obviously going to be based upon army paratroopers and marines.

Also the default combat uniforms they wear could be donned by regular Starfleet personnel (in the same way US Air Force and Navy personnel often wear BDUs identical to what the Army and Marine troops more typically wear). They could be called the Starfleet Ground Assault Corps. (the SGAC) but that does sound a bit too aggressive. I'm doing some brief sketches of Starfleet GAC troops and equipment which I'll post soon, but other posters are welcome to post in this thread their own artwork.

I had thought about a Starfleet subsidiary that could be considered "ground units", much like the Sea Bees are naval construction battalions (NCB's, hence the common name) that take on many traits of typical Army units. (My maternal grandfather was an "island-hopping" Sea Bee in the Pacific during WW II)

The Sea Bees are definitely part of the Navy, yet during WW II they took on many traits similar to the Army Corps of Engineers. The NCB's were subdivided into companies and platoons, and the petty officers therein served like platoon sergeants.

I have often thought it would be fascinating to create Starfleet units like the Sea Bees, for various functions on frontier/frontline outposts, space stations, starbases, colonies and other planetary long-term expeditions. Coming up with a name for them that de-emphasized the military aspect proved amusing. I settled on StarFIREs. (Star Fleet Itinerant Regiments and Expeditions).

I have repeatedly thought it would be a challenge to imagine StarFIRE uniforms, equipment, units and functions for TOS and TMP/TNG eras. Would this be what you are talking about?

The so called 'Sea Bees' are really an engineering division and not a pure attack force, although Starfleet could very well have an engineering division. I'm thinking of a military service more akin to the Marine Corps. but with Army overtones as well.

Yeah, it's an old but still interesting idea. My RPG group have been using them for a long time, we call them SGF (Starfleet Ground Forces). We use also a dedicated Starfigher command, SAF (Starfleet Aerospace Forces).
Strictly not a canonic interpretation, but still fun to play.
