Starfleet Dilemma: Which Captain Would You Follow?

Trek Writers Room

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
This is not a question about who you think is the best Captain. Instead, which Captain would you choose to serve under? Let’s remove the issue of ship or station and assume that the Captain of your choice is getting a new command with an entirely unknown bridge crew. Who would you choose, and why? I’d be interested to know your reasons.

1. Anson's PIke
2. Picard
3. Janeway
4. Sisko
5. Archer

Who's Freeman?

Sisko - great strategic mind, high moral character, wicked sense of humor

Captain Benjamin Sisko. Here's why...

1. He's the most approachable.

2. He clearly understands leadership extremely well. (Example: "RULES OF ENGAGEMENT". He explains to Worf how sometimes you have to put on a smile for your crew even if it's the last thing you want to do. "Because they're your troops. And you have to take care of them.")

3. He cooks for his crew.

4. He looks after his crew well, and not just in the job support sense. (Example: "THE HOUSE OF QUARK". Helping O'Brien with getting a cargo bay to make an arboretum just to help O'Brien help make his wife happy, and letting him know how hard it is to watch a loved one be unhappy and is ready to turn it around.)

5. Excellent tactician.

6. Doesn't take bs from anyone.

7. Willing to get his hands dirty to get the job done.

8. He's the most relatable.

9. He makes sure you get a promotion in a reasonable time. (Bashir, Dax, Nog were all promoted in a reasonable timeframe. O'Brien is a question mark, but his insignia DID change near the start of season 4, so this could be a promotion.)

10. A great father figure.

Bonus: he's the safest captain. He didn't lose a single Starfleet officer until "THE SEARCH, PART I". And even in wartime, it seems he lost less crew than others during peacetime. (I'm looking at both of you, Kirk and Picard.)

Captain Benjamin Sisko. Here's why...
This is a fantastic list highlighting why Captain Benjamin Sisko stands out as a remarkable leader and character. I'd love to delve deeper into your thoughts and hear more about your perspective. You mentioned that Sisko is the most relatable captain.
What specific qualities or experiences make him relatable to you?
How do you see yourself in him?
I'm really interested to hear more about your thoughts and any additional insights you might have!

1. Pike ( reason: seems very easy going , ,personable and approachable)

2. Archer ( simular reason)

3. Sisko ( guy is an amazing world builder but can be tough)

4. Janeway ( leadership qualities and she's smart too)

5. Picard ( actually my favorite captain, but meeting him would be intimidating, like serving with Jesus christ)

6. Kirk ( like meeting John Wayne or Marlon Brando . Great captain but not sure I would want to serve under him)

Everyone else

(Larg gap)

Burnham ( allot of questionable behavior IMO, erratic, too emotional for my tastes), unrealistic redemption path)

Favorite captain is a very different order. Picard, Pike, Sisko, Kirk, Janeway, Archer, Burnham.

Thank you, and I'd be happy to share more of my thoughts on Sisko!

What makes him so relatable to me?

I'll start with the pilot, "EMISSARY". He starts off, 3 years after losing his wife, still stuck in that moment full of pain and grief. By the end of the pilot, with the help of the Prophets, he is able to move past that moment and start healing. Already, he starts off the show as a human, not a larger than life captain of a starship. Years later, in 2005, I lost my grandmother... someone I was closer to than anyone. I was extremely distraught. I started drinking heavily. I was literally stuck in that moment of time when I saw her laying on the ground... a face so full of life and joy, no longer living. That image still haunts me sometimes. But after a while, I was able to slowly move on and keep her memory alive by following everything she taught me and doing my best to be a decent person.

He is a great father figure... one that ALL dads could learn something from. Great example: "SHADOWPLAY". Jake tells him he doesn't want to join Starfleet, which surprised Ben at first. And after listening to Jake explain he never wanted to join, he was fully supportive and simply told Jake that he just wanted him to find something he loved doing and to do the best you can at it. Another great example: "NOR THE BATTLE TO THE STRONG". After reading Jake's story he wrote about what happened on Ajilon Prime, he told Jake that anyone who's been in combat can see himself in this, and 'it takes courage to look inside yourself, and even more courage to write about it so that others can see. I'm proud of you." Ben was an understanding and supportive father... those are two of the best traits a parent can have. The only father figure I had was my grandfather, and he was also understanding and supportive. Watching Sisko as a teenager, I felt like I had two father figures... Sisko and my grandfather.

And at the end of the day, Sisko just shows us he is a man just trying his best in a universe that can be cruel and challenges you.

In a nutshell, those are the reasons why he is so relatable to me.

No dilemma here. Sisko all the way!

Out of all of them, he's got the temperment and command style I'd want to follow.

The only real times we see him drift into sanctimonious speeches and half-baked forays revolve around Hudson/Eddington and the Maquis. Betrayal aside, you get the impression Sisko just gets it when he's in command. He's the mix of even-tempered and action-oriented, approachable and firm, diplomat and cowboy. And as others have said, with his personal life, he seems like the CO with the most appreciation that his officers and crew have loved ones to safely go home to at the end of the day too, and keeps that in mind in his actions.

Also: which captain do you want to follow? One of the ones who's always irritating the Borg, or the one who's wormhole alien pals will wink out a Jem'Hadar fleet to get their Emissary back to his baseball. ;)
