Or because so much money has been poured in that they need to have a second season to help justify the costs. This is supposed to have the 'biggest set ever built' for the franchise.

It's also very possible that it was already going to be a minimum of two seasons when it was created, but announcement of the series made it appear only one season so they can come in and give a 'surprise early renewal'.

A number of shows in the past have been produced as a multi-season series guarantee whether it succeeded or failed, and just lets the contract expire if it is a failure. (FIRST WAVE on SciFi Channel, as an example, was contracted on the spot for 66 episodes when it got greenlit. That's 3 seasons.)

All very possible.

Still..... I do love the fact that right now, at this very second, there are some real fans who are absolutely screaming into their pillows over this announcement. An absolute joy to behold.

But wait, I thought Paramount had already cancelled the show before even airing it and Alex Kurtzman was supposed to be fired, drawn, and quartered in front of a panel of the Cult of Matalas members?

Picard was renewed for a second season early too.

Tatiana Maslany will be in Star Trek after all. Hopefully that means she might come to conventions and be able to talk Orphan Black.

Glad to see her come in for a landing after She-Hulk bit the dust at Disney. :(
