News Starfleet Academy Coming to P+

They need Boothby's great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandson being in charge of taking care of the gardens and lawns. The famiy business is still going strong. Their was Boothby on the job when the Federation first got started and now their is one still on the job so far in the future.

We've got enough Pioneer villages and historic conservatives areas around here, I'm surprised we've only seen one so far in "nuTrek."
Sounds like a good place for a Festival

Maybe we'll get a scene with some 32nd century Amish using programmable matter to build a barn.

The Amish wouldn't do such a thing.

The Mennonites would, though (They're much more into tech than the Amish).

I live near an Amish community. I can tell the Amish from the Mennonites based upon what kind of adult tricycle they ride (The Mennonites ride electric trikes. The Amish prefer to pedal theirs.)

The Amish will ride anything that requires a degree of physical exertion on their part (Rollerblades, skateboards, manual scooters, roller skates, bicycles, tricycles, etc.) They're concerned that modern conveniences like cars will (1) take them away from the community and (2) tempt them into committing the sin of sloth.

I went down there pre-Covid. They're devoutly religious people who take their faith seriously.

The Amish will do just about anything, as long as the bishop doesn't find out.

I, too, live in a rural community with plenty of both, and if there's one thing I've learned, it is that they're just as dirty and screwed up as the rest of us.

Wanna hear a genuine Amish joke? How can you tell if a woman is Mennonite? She has two men a night.

I almost fell over when I heard that told to me by an Amish fellow. But I sure did get an education. They drink and swear and do all the same crap as the rest of us, only they need to keep it hidden from their community bishop. He's the one with all the power to have a person or family shunned, if their caught "misbehaving."

Most also carry cell phones, which they keep charged in the barn, which is usually powered by diesel generators. They're allowed to use electricity for business purposes, just so long as their not "on the grid."

Not really Trek related, just something I've learned from personal experience. Who's to say what the Amish would be like in a thousand plus years.

The community nearest to me is called Pinecraft (It's where the Amish from up north go to retire and/or spend the winter).

They have Amish restaurants (they make a great mile-high apple pie  ) and Amish markets. They work construction (they do framing and finish carpentry).

Farming is tough nowadays (Establishing a working traditional Amish farm costs north of two million dollars. Plus, a lot of Amish are getting older and suffering the aches and pains that plague most people -- sciatica, herniated discs, bad knees, bad hips, etc.)

They're farmers. They do hard, back-breaking physical labor. Just like the rest of us, they reach the age where their mind says "Yes!" but their body says "No way!" :scream:

It depends upon the community and how much the bishop permits (some are more strict than others).

They're now getting into solar power (It enables their communities to generate electricity without connecting to the English grid).

Yeah it all depends on the community/sect's beliefs (?).
There are Amish groups that will drive modern vehicles if it's required for their work, and they will use cell phones, but with internet access disabled and only the calling features enabled.

As mentioned above some will use electricity if it's green (solar, wind, water etc), and off the grid.

They're a diverse group of people.

One of my favorite Weird Al parodies. The man is a rare talent... being able to successfully switch entire musical genres like he does so seamlessly.

My wife and I caught him live at the Hard Rock about 12 years or so ago. The tickets were free. (I got them from a reward program at the time.) I thought it would just be a fun diversion for a few hours. Never imagined it would turn out to be one of THE best concerts I've ever been to. He was AWESOME!
