News Starfleet Academy Coming to P+

Makes sense to set this to the 32nd century so they can reuse at least some of the sets, costumes and props from Discovery.
As for the premise itself..I am not super excited but it is not without potential either.

I'll watch it, but, i'm hovering at 0.01% enthusiasm after Tilly's cadet episode, which was Horrendous..

new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.

Oh.. joy.. 32nd century galaxy ending thing is still a thing.. :brickwall:

god.. wish they stuck it in the Enterprise Era.. ugh.
Explain to me how a threat to the academy and to the Federation somehow equals a galaxy ending event?

First and foremost the Federation doesn't equal the galaxy, even at its largest size it's never represented the galaxy. And most of the threats we have seen have been threats to life. The galaxy is vastly more than just life.

Then of course a threat to anything doesn't necessarily mean it's something to the degree that would end it. That can mean something that just makes it weaker. For example a cold is a threat to my body. Its has a very, very, very small chance to actually end it.

Now in being more fair, I do freely admit this is a time period I generally don't care that much about. And the concept is one that I have always had trepidations about. But I generally am not one to jump and make wildly inaccurate assumptions or claims (generally...).

And while the Discovery episode that seeds this wasn't a good episode, it was hardly horrendous (my opinion of course, but I have seen so much worse tv over 55 years that there is no way I could ever use the term horrendous to describe it). It was poor certainly, and I really am going to want to see and hear a bunch more before I even get excited by this news.

Post Disco show? Doesn't excite me as much as 24th/25th century Trek or even set in the early years of the Federation - like maybe the first class of students in the new Federation era of 22nd century.

Hope this isn't our version of a CW teen/young adult drama.

I have a feeling this is going to be a lame attempt at making Star Trek appeal to teens.

Hopefully it comes out around the same time as the Section 31 show.

This is a different show though, don't pre-judge it based off Discovery.

Agreed, it has a new show runner, a former Nancy Drew shower who also wrote for the magicians. I have no idea what to expect, I'm curious, but apprehensive. This show will NOT be able to rely on nostolgia, its only going to have to strenth of its writing, and the skill (and even the nature of the show sex appeal) of its cast.

This might be the price for getting a Star Trek Legacy for those who aren't fans of this idea. I still want Legacy.

Having Newsome be one of the writers is super interesting to me since she’s a super Trek nerd and tends to lean more to the comedic side of things.

I was assuming an angsty CW-style teen drama but maybe not.

Where did all the officers get their training before? The SFHQ station?

Now what's even left to announce on FC day? :D

I think they just need to make the show interesting and not just being about half naked, hot 20 somethings pretending to be teens.
Gene's ghost just bolted upright with a huge smile on his face and [REDACTED].

Not just a super Trek nerd, a super DS9 nerd. Her involvement soothes a lot of the qualms I have about this premise.

SFA will be relatively cheap to produce, they'll reuse assets from Discovery and a new cast will cost less. Personally I think the 32nd is the perfect setting for an Academy series given the Federation is continuing to rebuild itself and many of it's members are having to relearn how to work together. There is also a 'wild west' quality to the setting that I think has been missing from the franchise since TOS. Also, I love the 32nd century and really looking forward to more adventures there.

I think there will definitely be an announcement about a 'Star Trek Legacy' series as well. Picard Season 3 has had the feeling of it being a backdoor pilot. The reviews and clicks will absolutely be equaling dollar signs for Paramount right now. I also don't think a 25th century series will be that expensive either. Again, they have a ton of assets in the 25th century and the cast would be largely unknowns apart from Jeri Ryan and Todd Stashwick. Regarding the sets being struck, my guess would be because production will move to Toronto where it is a fuckton cheaper to film and to just rebuild the sets.

To borrow a phrase from Discovery 'All is possible' and I am very excited for both of these series to happen.

From The Hollywood Reporter:

"The new series seems to hint at a more soapy YA (Young Adult) Trek than the other shows, as well as increased Diversity."

Discovery was criticized for the group hugs, constant crying, and melodrama.

At least now, it will happen with kid characters, not seasoned adults.

IT'S HAPPENING!!!!!

The Smallville/Buffy Trek I've wanted for decades is HAPPENING AAAAHSHDIEIR9G9VOCO K K

I've always been strongly disinterested in this, but I'm going to do something I wish more fans would.

I'm going to congratulate you for getting what you want, keep as much of an open mind as possible toward it, give it a fair shake, and - even if it's not for me - be grateful for what I do have and glad you have something nice, too.

So, the adult I met with who had tears at work is not seasoned?:vulcan:

I think they would have used Headquarters or had cadets field training on Starships. May have also had a lot of children of Starfleet officers taking over from their parents. The Federation fleet looked to be only a 100 or so ships by the time Discovery arrived, so a full blown academy probably wasn't necessary or pratical.

Absolutely this. If this turns out to be someone a lot of fans like and it doesn't negatively affect anything else (like making it canon the Klingons all died out in 2402 or something like that), then that's great. As a Doctor Who fan I managed to survive not having an interest in Torchwood, Sarah Jane Adventures and Class, I'm sure I'll be able to cope with a Starfleet Academy show that doesn't appeal to me.

I just want more of this

Yeah heaven forbid somebody cry when they are seeing their parents for the last time, or watching their friend die or finding out the reason for their parents murder or coming to terms with the fact you are about to travel 1000 years into an unknown future or watching their brother suffer in pain or losing their mother who they thought was dead for the second time

How could any of that possibly bring someone to tears.

The Hollywood Reporter: "Paramount+ Orders Diverse, Teen-Focused ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ Series"

More diversity?
They already had a show without a single straight white man.

If you look up the co-showrunner this shouldn't come as a surprise.
Noga Landau is also the co-creator of the "Tom Swift" show for The CW.
The show is an "adaptation" of the "Tom Swift" books by Edward Stratemeyer with a race-swapped Tom Swift and a very diverse all-black main cast.
Very diverse.
