Star Wars VIII release date changed....

So is this "we need more time to make it better" or "we think we can make more money later"?

I think it's a money thing this time. I mean, they only just started shooting, and as far as we know, there are no issues.

Disney and Sony are shuffling a bunch of stuff. They moved the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie (they're making one?!) into this slot, Spider-Man is moving into Pirates' slot on July 7, and the Jumanji remake is being pushed back from December 2016 into Spidey's slot on July 28, 2017. My eyes are spinning.

Or it's a realised we won't get post done in time given as you said, they've only just started shooting.

When did shooting start officially, anyway? I know John Boyega stated he started working last week, but was that the official start of filming?

You tell me, you said they started filming recently.

Boo.

Appereantly, they already started shooting in september..... According to the wiki-page for EpVIII anyway.

They did some pick-ups or some such out in Kerry before they recreated Skellig Michael at Pinewood.

Pick-ups for EpVII you mean, or stuff for EpVIII? Because with the average movie spending about 90-100 days on principal photography, that would be mean EpVIII is basicly in the can.

I'm really not sure, all I know is that they filmed some stuff at Skellig Michael when the weather probably permitted it, I doubt it was for VII, was probably for VIII. but just because they decided to film some stuff then doesn't mean the rest of the principle photography was then filmed.

Either pickups for Episode VII or proper seasonal shots for Episode VIII so they could make it look correct for the scenes without forcing a wait until fall of this year to shoot it.

Remember that there was one scene of Episode III filmed during Episode II, so it is entirely possible they filmed a piece of Episode VIII last year so they would have that amount of location shooting finished.

No, I hadn't asumed they had started principal photography yet. I mean, John Boyega stated he started working on the movie last week, and it would be odd if they had spent over 4 months of big scenes without one of the main cast.

And yet from what you wrote it did sound like you assumed they had almost finished filming.

Anyway, that's neither here nor there, I suspect the reason why Disney/Lucasart moved the release date is they aren't confident that they can get post production down in time.

Plus there is the marketing standpoint of uniformality that all Star Wars films will now be a Winter and not Summer release given the lack of competition around that time of year.

When you make nearly $2 billion from releasing a movie in December, a time that's generally for Oscar bait and a dumping ground for shit, it makes sense to release the sequel in that same time period.

Rats.

They should have moved it up to Dec. 2016. Then we would have a movie a year like LOTR.
