Star Wars The Old Republic

I think I understood about a fifth of that

Somehow I did get a social point so I finished that bit.

Yeah, i started playing it last year, play it off and on again...
Bought the Digital Upgrade soon after so my characters can run from the start...
I have 4 characters, 2 on each side...

With the Sith i pick light side options, makes for some interresting reactions from NPCS.

Is this proper social etiquette? Whenever I pass someone fighting on the same level on me I do that purple join my team click thing, but then I don't bother paying attention to what they're doing unless they're going the same way I am.

I don't think it'd be terribly helpful since I'm pretty sure you don't get the shared XP bonus once you're out of a certain range of a group member.

Personally I tend not to bother grouping up for the standard questing, so I can't say what is and is not the done thing.

As an occasional TOR player I'll say that I find it very annoying when a stranger randomly invites me to group up. But I prefer to play solo except during Heroics or Flashpoints (or unless one of my friends are online), so your mileage may vary.

Dude. If I wander into an area where the villains are just one level higher than me I immediately get massacred.

Also, what's the mechanics on my companion dying? I never even notice it happening and then I end up running around for hours without him/her/it, then sometimes when I finish a mission they return. But not any time I finish a mission. How can I bring them back?

If you look on the bottom left corner where their portrait usually appears, you should be able to click a button to summon them, I think. If not, I think you can right click on the empty portrait and do the same.

Also, all of a sudden all my weapons and armor is in the red? I didn't know I had to be doing something to repair them. I don't even know where to do this. When I try to hit someone it says "lightsaber is broken".

Go to a vendor and click on the Repair button that comes up when you click on them. You have to pay for it, but it's cheap.

Ok, I know how to repair crap and how to re-summon my companion. And I just bought my first Stronghold whatever that is. I went to fight Lord Taris and immediately died. Back to level grinding.

Strongholds are a very recent addition and are really only of benefit to people with several characters. Mostly though it's just a cash sink for high level players.

A good way to get xp is to do the Heroic 4 missions. Basically just little quests that take 4 people in a group to complete, but it should give you a good amount of xp, especially if you use the complimentary xp boost.
The usual way to find an H4 group in chat is to type "LFG" in chat, then shift-click the H4 quest name on your mission tracker and that should paste it's name straight into chat. Be sure to say you're a tank as that always helps.

OK for the life of me I cannot figure out how to give armor/gifts to my companion. The tutorial doesn't explain how. I've tried clicking everything in the world.

You just equip armor for them the way you do for your own character. When you open up the window that shows your character's gear, on either the bottom or the top (I can't remember exactly, anymore) will be a tab for your companion. Click that and it'll show you their gear, and you can equip them however you see fit.

To give a gift to a companion, I think you just need to have the companion with you, and then right click on the gift. But it's been a while, so I'm not 100% on that.

Not all gifts are equal. There are around 10 types of gifts and probably only two of them will be of any benefit to any particular companion. When you hover over the gift it should tell you if will have an impact and whether it will be small, medium or large. The game won't stop you using a gift even if it give zero increase in affection from a companion, so you can save the gift or sell it.

Another good way to get experience is in PVP. It's also a good source for credits in terms of the individual matches and the daily and weekly missions, which are just play X number of warzones in a day/over a week. Though prepare for a lot of complaining and feeling that the game is unfair, especially when you're at the lower level end and facing those closer to the top end of the tier level cutoff.

I beat Lord Taris on Coruscant and now it's off to Ord Mandrell!

How long do your companions last? I have the T3 droid and Kira. I don't want to give them crap right before they die or something. Do they last the whole game? 'Cuz I don't see anyone else with a Kira running around. I think I've seen a few droid companions.

They don't die, though some of them might become unavailable for a while for story reasons.
Companion appearances can be changed, so you might have seen a few Kiras, just not with default appearance.

I'm so bummed they never really came out with KOTOR 3.

I only have an old-ass MAC laptop for a computer these days, and I'm pretty sure it couldn't handle The Old Republic.

It is KOTOR 3 more or less. Not necessarily a good thing. The Bioware formula is getting a bit long in the tooth.

It is. Fortunately, they seem to be changing things up with Dragon Age: Inquisition, which may indicate an overall change in design philosophy to their games. I mean, going from what they've been known for, to an open-world Skyrim-like game full of exploration seems like quite a change for them, but at the same time, I think they realize that they have to. Their current formula is mostly designed around hardware limitations.

OK, this was weird. Having finished Coruscant I went to Ord Mantell. When I was on the overworld the villains were extremely weak so apparently I was supposed to have done this earlier in the game. But when I went into the base the villains were at my level and the boss killed me five times before I finished to half-ass my way to victory. Then I go back to the space station, get attacked by five Sith and immediately die. I have no idea how I'm expected to survive that encounter that's forced upon me.
