It sucks that production companies can get away with not cleaning up after themselves like this.

Agreed -- although a few things left in the desert aren't as bad as, say, the ecological damage caused by something like The Beach (1999).

New Zealand's entire tourist industry is based on the production companies not cleaning up after themselves.

The article is somewhat misleading - it suggests those sets have been sitting there basically untouched since the original filming and the photographer "discovered" them. In fact there have been organized tours of the Star Wars sets in Tunisia for years.
