Star Wars Rebels Season One (spoilers)

Is this the first time it's been mentioned that the Ghost is a Corellian ship? I guess that explains its design similarities to the Millennium Falcon. (In-universe, that is. Isn't it based on one of McQuarrie's concept sketches for the MF?)

I've always heard that the original concepts for the Falcon ended up transforming into the Tantive IV, but that would be some cool images to see if he actually did Falcon concepts all those years ago, that would ultimately inspire the Ghost.

Personally, the Ghost has always reminded me (superficially at least) of the shuttle/escape craft Narcissus, which belonged to the Nostromo from Alien.

I've been avoiding spoilers as much as possible, so his appearance really surprised me.

The episode title was a big clue...
Really? Must be some expanded universe reference I'm not familiar with.
(Update: I Googled the title and saw it has some reference to that game they were playing at the opening. I must admit, I'm not all too familiar with every nook and cranny of the Expanded subject matter).

Well he should be the Moff in charge of the Outer Rim, or perhaps the increasing threat of the Rebels establishes him as Grand Moff of the Outer Rim Oversector to deal with the rebellion. All the while working on the much delayed Death Star.

Then again, we don't really know how long the construction of the Death Star actually took. Maybe it was completed (for the most part) several years after Revenge of the Sith, but the lack of Kyber Crystals, for the laser, hindered it's final readiness.

^^The Book "A New Dawn" kind of very vaguely hints at the Death Star construction, by wondering just what the Empire needs with so much raw material. Considering that takes place at most a few years before Rebels, I think its safe to say the Death Star is still in the middle of construction - it probably looks something akin to the second Death Star's completion at this point.

Enjoyable enough for a filler episode. It had some fun bits, though It'd be nice if for once they didn't solve a problem with their guns.

The fan service worked for me, I enjoyed our guest appearance with ol' Lando. I'm not sure if my problems with the show is the show itself or that it pales in comparison to Clone Wars.

Funny, I found this in the Xfinity OnDemand menu but it wasn't flagged as new yet Droids in Distress was.

Guys, it's been over three full decades since BDW last played Lando.

It's only been a little over 12 years, if we count Jedi Outcast.
( If we count comedic portrayals not meant to be taking place in SW continuity such as Robot Chicken and the Lego Movie, it's been much more recent. )

The episode titles of the final three shows this season were posted. (Source: Toonzone)
Mon Feb 2 - 9:00 - 112 - Vision of Hope
Mon Feb 9 - 9:00 - 113 - Call to Action
Mon Feb 23 - 9:00 - 114 - Rebel Resolve

Based on those dates can deduce that the next two shows will probably air like this:
Mon Jan 19 - 9:00 - 110 - *Title Unknown*
Mon Jan 26 - 9:00 - 111 - *Title Unknown*

Here are my predictions as to what kind of story those new titles suggest:

Vision of Hope - using the magic word 'Hope' to me suggests a strong connection to any storyline from A New Hope. Maybe Obi Wan communicates with Ezra/Kanan from Tattooine? Maybe we even get some Owen/Beru Lars involvement? Or Ezra's parents?

Call to Action - isn't this the part of the story where the hero leaves the familiar behind? [Joseph Campbell] For those of us feeling tired of Lothal, maybe our heroes leave the planet for good in this one... AKA the Imperials Finally Get a Clue. How may incursions from the same ship can they tolerate from the same location? I hope Vader stops by personally looking to slay Force-sensitives. The story will likely be Ezra-centric.

Rebel Resolve - Hopefully we find out who the hell Fulcrum is. We are long overdue to learn about Ezra's parents by now. I'd like to see the Rebels crew connected with the larger Rebellion by the time the season ends. If they do a cliffhanger, seeing Ezra captured or turned to 'join' the dark side might be interesting.

CW or CW season 1?

Probably the end, just that since that basically Clone Wars was cancelled in favor of this that it's hard for me to judge Rebels impartially on its own merits and not against the series I had been enjoying.

I'm trying to wait until all of season 1 is out before making a huge TCW vs SWR comparison... but I'm looking forward to that conversation. A major change in scope and story style has been refreshing... but it's hard to compare back to TCW and say Rebels has been 'better'.... but certainly some will choose to make that argument. Most of the shows we've seen so far are busy setting things up for later.

CORRECTION:
I completely confused the damn production codes with the upcoming episode numbers... dammit. Here's the correction:

Mon Feb 2 - 9:00 - 1x10 - Vision of Hope
Mon Feb 9 - 9:00 - 1x11 - Call to Action
Mon Feb 23 - 9:00 - 1x12 - Rebel Resolve

That makes MUCH more sense, since we are getting a 2-part finale. The good news, next Monday 26 will be the date Disney XP should deploy Vision of Hope. The news I can't understand is that the season 2 premiere is going to be shown at Celebration in the spring... but why start the new season that early? Unless they aren't going to have new episodes running concurrently with Episode VII this coming December? Maybe not - and we'll get the entire season 2 starting from the spring through the summer. That might be awesome.

I liked "Idiot's Array."

It showed what kind of person he was until he 'grew up' later on in the original trilogy. I also liked how he was always one step ahead of everyone else who always thought they were one step ahead of him. (And, it was impressive how he was making the guys jealous by either hitting on Hera or Sabine...lol)

It was a cool little episode.

"Vision of Hope" popped up on my cable system's Video On Demand for Disney XD earlier than I expected. A pretty solid episode that moves things forward, IMO. Not to spoil anyone, but there is a bit of a game changer in this episode, or at least something that might make some think back at a couple of previous episodes.

Vision of Hope wasn't too bad. Animation wise, I liked some of the lighting in the smoke and the tunnels offered some variation in geometry and angles. Steven Blum as the stormtrooper questioning Chopper sounds just like Toonami Tom on Cartoon Network.:). Even Senator David Niven (whatever his name was) was disappointed by the size of the Rebels.

After the improvement of the last two episodes, this felt like something of a backstep. I can't quite put my finger on why, but it felt tonally schizophrenic. Maybe it's the choices in the scoring being at odds with the writing because the former seems to want the episode to be an wacky, adventurous romp while the latter wants to be a suspenseful and emotionally engaging thriller.

It's odd that this is the case because I remember some early episodes of TCW suffered a similar problem. You'd think they'd have learnt from their previous experiences, no?

Yes Reverend, I found this new episode especially frustrating. Sure, they want to wait until the season finale to make the big reveals - plural. There's just too much treading water. We tend to learn almost nothing with each progression forward. Now it seems that
Ezra's backstory & parents, Fulcrum's identity and the underground of Rebels as organized by Bail Organa
is probably not going to be clear until the final 15 seconds of the finale. Which is dumb. At this point, they are stretching the story out kind of like The Hobbit films.

The Imperials not having images of each rebels' face and ship plastered all over Lothal? Laughable. This Empire really does deserve to be defeated. Callus and the Inquisitor seem kind of incompetent. Inky managed to only capture Ezra once for what.. a couple of hours?

Lothal may yet fall victim to Base Delta Zero Initiative, maybe after all the resources are extracted. On the plus side of this one, Ezra had some of the best lines this time. And the group were shown quite effective as a team.

They are both operating as Imperial double agents.

As far as I'm concerned the plot is advancing at a sensible pace as far as I'm concerned. Honestly, I'm surprised they resolved the "Senator in Exile" thread as quickly as they did. I'm not concerned about the story or plotting so much as the disjointed tone. I think the show is still struggling to get a sense of it's identity.

I recall 'The Batman' animated series has a similar problem. It tried to be fun and bright yet dark and cool. The result was a schizophrenic mess that didn't know if it wanted to be BTAS or Superfriends.

I feel Rebels is in that zone right now. I mean I don't mind if they want to to be light and cheesey fun, nor would I mind a more serious tone. I just hope they pick a direction and stick to it.

In the long run I'm just confused as to why an experienced crew like this is repeating their old mistakes. Is it that they genuinely haven't fully committed to a particular "voice" or is there some creative tug-of-war going on behind the scenes?

I don't have a problem with it. Ever B5, which was pretty much THE arc series had its filler episodes.

I'm sure they'll be back to shaking the pillars of the Star Wars universe soon enough.

Well, B5 was "THE arc series" in the sense that it was the pioneer of the modern season-arc structure, but it was a lot more episodic than people remember. Rather than the full-on serial format of something like Lost or Grimm, where each episode just contains segments of multiple parallel plotlines and each plotline takes several episodes to resolve, B5 took an episodic-serial approach where each episode focused on a single main story that began and ended within that episode, but that story still tied in to the greater evolving narrative. And sometimes an episode's connection to the larger whole didn't become evident until later.
