Star Wars Novel Question?

Ok dont set you phasers to kill but I decided to read the New republic era SW novels.

Is the correct order to start with Shadows of Mindor then procede to the X-wing series?

^^ If by "correct" you mean chronological order, than yes that's (probably) the right order.

That also confirms your first post, Shadows of Mindor is set before the first X-Wing novel.

Though, the anthology Tales of the New Republic, leaps around from pre-ANH to decades ABY, so I'm not sure why it is where it is since chronologically the earliest set story in the book is well before 5 ABY.

Should enjoy it. The Zahn & Stackpole books in particular are superb, and there's a few other good books in there.

Not like the barren wasteland that is "new jedi order".

Should I have started with the Jedi Prince books?

During this confusion I have gone back to Trek and am reading A time to Sow.

Also, they're pretty bad. How many books need robot duplicates, a half-dozen on-the-nose environmental analogies, and two human characters whose primary characteristic is that they have three eyes?

Just stick with Timothy Zahn. Leave the rest alone or you'll likely be sorely disappointed.

Skip them.

Also, when you get to that point I'd suggest reading the thrawn trilogy novels before tantooine ghost. Publication date wise, the trilogy introduces a character later used in tantooine ghost, and the trilogy is the best place to be introduced to him by far.

That website has the correct chronological order; also, most recent SW books have a timeline in the front as well. Just skip all the kids books, read only the adult ones, and you'll be fine.

The reason I say this is that you'll find the other authors just don't have the same chops as him, or have annoying tendencies.

Michael Stackpole: Inserts himself into canon with his avatar, Corran Horn.
Kevin J. Anderson: Very heavy-handed. Much of his work was designed to bring his own comics line into greater focus. Said comics were actually pretty entertaining, just not very good Star Wars material. The best thing this guy ever did was inspire KotoR.
That addition is somewhat detracted by his creation of a female Imperial admiral who was so good at her job that she was promoted beyond all other women and happened to be Tarkin's lover. Then she proceeds to fail at almost everything she ever attempts, both in KJA's canon as well as that of later authors.
Vonda MacIntyre: Want to lol? Read The Crystal Star. It's all about Cthullu trying to nom the universe. And some annoying kids are in there, as well.
R.A. Salvatore: Introduces a race that seems to be inspired by his work on Dungeons and Dragons. Then the plot of the NJO series spirals out of control with all sorts of dark side conversions.

The authors after Zahn cannot agree on what to do with supporting characters, including Zahn's Mara Jade. Is Mara attracted to Luke at all? Dating him? Dating Lando? It depends on what the next author wants, regardless of previous characterization. The same goes for Wedge and Lando.

I wish there was something a lot closer than 6 years after ROTJ. I'd like to seesomethin set 6 monthsto a year after ROTJ.

Truce at Bakura starts the day after RoTJ. Or something like that.

And DON'T read those Jedi Prince books. They are garbage and full of continuity errors. I don't know why they keep referring to them as part of the canon, they are awful!

I think some of theX-Wing books are set just after ROJ. After the previous 9 book series I've quit fo now, just couldn't keep up plus I was so-so as to where things were going.

truce at bakura
luke skywalker shadows of mindor
x wing 1-7
courtship of princess leia
tatooine ghost
thrawn trilogy
x wing 8
the jedi academy trilogy
i jedi
children of the jedi
darksaber
planet of twilight
x wing 9
the crystal star
the black fleet crisis
the new rebellion
the corellian trilogy
the hand of thrawn duolgy
survivor's quest

that is the reading order for the new republic books and then onto the new jedi order.

It includes some books set before the New Republic era, but if it helps, here's a list of what I consider to be the best and/or essential books (with a couple of comics thrown in), in chronological order:

Rogue Planet by Greg Bear (not my favorite EU novel, but it's kind of a prequel to the NJO series)
Outbound Flight by Timothy Zahn
Shatterpoint by Matthew Stover (not really essential, but the subject plays a role later, plus it's just an awesome book)
Allegiance by Timothy Zahn
Shadows of the Empire by Steve Perry (I personally don't think it's essential, but others do, and it's a decent book)
The Truce at Bakura by Kathy Tyers (not great, but it directly follows ROTJ and has a few important character moments)
Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor by Matthew Stover
X-wing, Series One by Michael A. Stackpole
-Rogue Squadron
-
Wedge's Gamble
-The Krytos Trap
-
The Bacta War

-Solo Command

The Courtship of Princess Leia by Dave Wolverton
Tatooine Ghost by Troy Denning

-Ambush at Corellia
-Assault at Selonia
-Showdown at Centerpoint

The Hand of Thrawn Duology by Timothy Zahn
-Specter of the Past
-Vision of the Future

Survivor's Quest by Timothy Zahn
Young Jedi Knights Books 1-6 by Kevin J. Anderson and Rebecca Moesta (young adult)
-Heirs of the Force
-Shadow Academy
-The Lost Ones
-Lightsabers
-Darkest Knight
-Jedi Under Siege
The New Jedi Order by various authors
The Dark Nest Trilogy* by Troy Denning
-The Joiner King
-The Unseen Queen
-The Swarm War

Legacy of the Force* by Aaron Allston, Karen Traviss, and Troy Denning
Fate of the Jedi* by Aaron Allston, Christie Golden, and Troy Denning
Legacy by John Ostrander and Jan Duursema (comic)

*Even though I included them in my list, I personally prefer to ignore Dark Nest, Legacy of the Force, and Fate of the Jedi, and go from The New Jedi Order directly to Legacy.

Happy reading! :techman:
