Star Wars: How do I watch the animated shows?

i looked at your site and was wondering how i can buy your books? i couldn't find a way to do it.

That's odd, because my site includes ordering links for everything that's still available. Did you look at the specific Fiction pages in the index or just the front page?

^ You can watch the micro-series as they are back to back. The current Clone Wars series is CGI and some events have been ignored from the micro-series, others haven't.

I'm pretty sure that the current series is set between the two seasons of the previous series. But since the second season of the micro series was already rendered non-canon by Labyrinth of Evil, it doesn't really matter.

Step 1: Position your head so that your eyes are facing in the direction of the program you wish to watch.

Step 2: Ensure that both pairs of eyelids are retracted so as not to obstruct the line of sight between your eyes and the program as it plays. The eyelids will briefly close over the eyes and retract again every few seconds, but this should not significantly impede the viewing experience.

These are actually steps three and four. Step one is to make sure you have a comfortable chair (recliner, couch, whatever).

Step two is to have a tall glass of ice water, a sandwich, and a bag of chips on the the table next to the recliner (or couch, whatever).

THEN you focus on steps three and four.

Read Dark Horse's Clone Wars-era comics first. They are great. Then watch the 2003 animated show. It's very artistic, like Samurai Jack (made by the same guy) and really fun to watch. If you have to, watch the CG show but watch it last. I imagine that you'll probably won't like Capote the Hutt.

This thread has gone on unnecessarily longer than it should have. He just asked about the shows not anything else.

The earlier Clone Wars DVDs are a bit rarer and out of print, and it doesn't look like there will be a re-release. Some rental services might still have copies, though and there's always ebay, although the DVDs do often go for a lot.

On the other hand, the 2008-current series is easy to find everywhere.

Lucas, I think, has been a bit rude towards Tartovsky, who produced the original microseries. The Clone Wars 3D models are clearly based on Tartovsky's designs, and he doesn't get credit for it at all. Plus Lucas acts like all previous Clone Wars media doesn't exist.

I see them in the used DVD stores all the time, in fact I picked up near mint copies at a rummage sale yesterday morning for 25c a piece.

Yeah, that's always kinda pissed me off a bit that Tartovsky wasn't basically handed the keys to the series after his spectacular showing with the first series of Clone Wars episodes.
But I have watched the first season and part of the second of the new series and it's pretty darn good on it's own too.

As for viewing order? Basically, the first disc of the first Clone Wars series starts almost immediately after Attack of the Clones, there's a time jump, then the second disc leads right into the opening of Revenge of the Sith. So watch the first volume of the first series, then all of the CGI series, then the volume of the first series.

^Sigh. Just watch whatever you want to watch.

At the risk of being dense and giving the OP more of a benefit-of-doubt...

I *think* the OP might mean the names of the stupid shows. I know what people mean when they say the short clips since the 200x show was like 3-min durations each or some such thing and then the CGI is the (standard) 30 min episodes.

But for the life of me, I can't figure out what their names are. Oh sure, it's the clone wars. But one is Star Wars: Clone Wars and another one is The Clone Wars or some such really weird thing - or maybe it's just me. I wish they had done it (similar to) Justice League-like. Justice League followed by Justice League Unlimited. (simple easy to follow).

I have to go to wikipedia to figure out what's the name of what show.

Edit - Didn't mean to say stupid shows. The shows are fine. The names are cryptically similar to each other.

Basically, they're two different shows that cater to two different tastes.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Star Wars: Clone Wars (2003) - The 2D animated one, is a far more moody, big on visuals light on story and dialogue "performance piece" if you will. Considering the first Volume (the first 2 seasons) of this show consists of 3 MINUTE episodes, you can blow through the entire series in about half an hour.

The 3rd season (Second Volume) consists of 5 10-20 minute episodes which gets into more story while retaining the gorgeous visual style of the previous eps. But you should also keep in the back of your mind it was conceived as a hasty intro to Revenge of the Sith (after Lucas realised he had another clusterfuck on his hands) so much of the story is devoted to the battle of Coruscant (Although to be honest the Battle as shown in this series is better than what we got in the film).

As it stands "officially", It's almost non-existant from an official LucasFilm PoV, maybe because it was better and tonally different to the films? Maybe Lucas had a bad trip, I don't know, but generally it has little bearing on THE Clone Wars, but seeing as you can get through the entire thing in about an hour, I guess its worth watching just so you pick up all the little bits and pieces.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) is a 3D CG animated show that you see all over the place nowadays. While it shares some of the visual style of the 2D show, the colors are far more muted, and the vehicles/space battles/most of the environments are modeled "real", like they would appear in the movies. It's very much a story of the week kind of show, but one that has overreaching themes that span the entire series. Like others have pointed out, its not in chronological order (The opening 2 episodes of season 3 are a prequel, and sequel to the 1st, and 5th episodes of season 1). However, like Season 4 of Star Trek: Enterprise the series relies on 3 episode arcs to tell one big story, and these are usually always one after another. Considering each episode is a 20 minute show, it will take some time to get caught up. Luckily the series don't start again till October I think, so you have time.

So, overall, i'd say its best to watch the 2D animated show first (Star Wars: Clone Wars) purely because you can do it in about an hour, and it should set up any little bits and pieces which might go unexplained in the CG show (Star Wars: The Clone Wars).
