Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox officially announced today that all six live-action Star Wars films will arrive on the Blu-ray format in Fall 2011 as a commemorative box set.

The news, part of this week's Celebration V festivities, promises "the highest possible picture and audio presentation, along with extensive special features – including documentaries, vintage behind-the-scenes moments, interviews, retrospectives and never-before-seen footage from the Lucasfilm archives."

“Blu-ray is the absolute best way to experience Star Wars at home – in pristine high definition,” said George Lucas of the release, “The films have never looked or sounded better.”

Awesome! About time.

I take it they finally came out on DVD at some point? Frankly at some point I just stopped caring.

I'll buy it, as long as the video and audio are up to standard and aren't just a rush job. Hopefully they fix the lightsabers in the OT this time.

So... you have to buy all six in a single box and that's the only option?

The Star Wars original trilogy dvds were first released as a trilogy set on dvd, but they weren't released as seperate movies until a few years later. I imagine they will do the same thing with the Blu-Ray saga set. It's a good way for Lucas to make as much money as he can.

They were rushing it a little with the first dvds, which is why there were problems with it. They should do much better job with the Blu-Ray set this time. The lightsabers coloring should easily be fixed and John William's score hopefully be heard again when the X-Wings first dive down to attack the Death Star. Messing up William's score at that moment was what bugged me the most about ANH SE.

I will buy the original trilogy if it is available separate from the prequels. Otherwise, I probably won't bother.

So I assume this version of TPM will include things like the CGI Yoda that matches the one from the other prequel films? (Did that ever make it to standard DVD, by the way?)

They've already finished all the effects work for him. I don't see why they wouldn't replace the original TPM Yoda, which still looks horrible.

(Did that ever make it to standard DVD, by the way?)

Nope. The new TMP CGI Yoda was only shown in the Revenge of the Sith dvd extras and they showed clips of him in the Star Wars In Concert events.

I remember when they were making ROTS there were rumors that they filmed a scene for ANH where the Emperor dissolves the Senate and we see Bail Organa blowing up on Alderaan. Did this actually get made?

Give me the 3 originals in HD, cleaned up with no crappy extra song and dance routines added, or fuck off.

I know it's a broken record but I would be more excited for the new versions if the original versions were made available in a decent release. Beyond my own selfish reasons for wanting them I think Lucas does himself a disservice by diminishing the extraordinary things he and his crew were able to accomplish 30 years ago.

It'll be the last thing he does, because he knows a lot of people want it. He'll want to milk them for a myriad of other versions before he actually puts out something they want rather than something they have to settle for.

I really wish I didn't care. I mean Star Wars is coming out in 1080p! How f'n awesome is that? And yet there is that lingering bit always there to taint it.

The unaltered OT movies are already out on dvd. Yeah, the quality isn't very good (They are on the second disc and treated as bonus features), but you can get them if you want the original movies that badly. It might be a while, if ever, until we get the unaltered OT on Blu-Ray.

Yeah exactly.

I'm annoyed they won't be including the OT Laser disc version as extras in the release. I understand that we will most likely never get an HD anamorphic version of the OT, but why not include the OT as an SD extra?
