Star Wars Fan Art

With Star Wars Episode VII coming out next year, I’ve recently been contemplating what some of the familiar characters from the original trilogy might look like 30 years on from when we last saw them. There are a couple of leaked concept art pieces of Han Solo floating around out there but they're pretty basic and the image quality isn't great. I need some more character pieces for my portfolio anyway so I thought I'd try my hand at a better one:

I based this on photos of Harrison Ford from around the time he injured his leg where he was sporting the beard and mustache, along with the aforementioned concept art pieces for costume reference. Interestingly, the concept art shows Ford without the facial hair, so I decided to do an alternate version on the off-chance that he shaved for the actual filming:

If I can find the time, I may do a few more of these for some of the other characters. Still got lots of other projects going on, though, so it will happen when it happens.

Excellent work! I figure the shaved version looks more like Han, but I guess there's no reason he couldn't have grown a bead.

Just fixed some proportional issues with his face and the shape of his mouth in the second beardless image. I think it's now a closer match to Ford.

I also did an alternate version of the bearded image with his lips closed instead of parted and some proportional tweaks similar to the beardless version:

I just replaced the first bearded version with the alternate on my Website and a couple of other places where I posted it. The original kept reminding me of those dorky class photos where you wound up smiling like your jaw was wired shut.

I can easily imagine someone confusing these paintings to be "official" concept art and then the rumor mills will go into overdrive as a string of fans play "pass it along".

Sincerely,

Bill

You know, not to detract form this piece's greatness (and seriously, I doubt I could pull it off... it seriously is very good)...

...but, meant entirely as constructive criticism, something bugs me about it. I can't quite put my finger on it, but there is something that doesn't quite work. Maybe the eyes? Maybe the eyebrows? If I cover up the eyes, you've got Harrison Ford's likeness nailed, but the eyes up? I don't know, something about this is definitely tweaking with my brain.

I think it's his nose. The eyebrows may be a little too thick as well but mostly the shape of his nose is off. I'll probably do another round of tweaks in the next couple of days.

I agree that his nose is a little off. Kinda looks he got into a fight, broke his nose, and it never quite healed properly.

I agree... It would be cool if these get picked up and passed along.

I remember it being a lot of fun when that happened with my poster. :)

Ford's nose looks like a parenthesis when viewed straight on, which has only become more pronounced as he has aged. In my illustration, most of the problems are in the shape of the nostrils and the tip of the nose. I started with the intent of a more upward angle to his head but never fully corrected that in those areas.

As for the eyes, Ford's tend to be narrower but are very much dependent on his expression at any given moment. One thing I know is wrong are the bags under his eyes, which are more pronounced than they should be. And as previously stated, his eyebrows are probably a little too thick.

I'll fix all that in the next go-round.

I really doubt that's going to happen here. The images are clearly marked with my Vektor Visual name and logo, and anyone who follows it to my website will be greeted with the explanation that this is fan art. I'll be pleased if it makes a splash to some degree but I don't think anyone is going to mistake it for something official.
