Star Wars Eps I-VI Blu-Ray Release - Review Thread

Re: Star Wars: The Complete Saga On Blu-Ray Breaks Worldwide Sales Rec

I'm actually surprised - not because of the movies, but because I didn't know Blu-Ray was that highly adopted yet.

Oh, I expect some obsessive collectors would buy the set before they even possess a Blu-ray player.

Maybe. Hell, I have Serenity on Blu-Ray and no player!

I also have a few newer movies on BR, but because they've been released with regular DVD's for only $5 more. That is, in my opinion, a great incentive to get people purchasing Blu-Ray's.

Seriously? blu rays are out without competition for 3 years now. HDTVs are standard now. The Playstation comes with blurays. Every new home computer includes a bluray drive.

Without competition? Every store has a blu-ray section that is a fraction the size of their standard DVD section!

Blu-ray may have been out for 3 years, but it hasn't caught on nearly as quickly as standard DVD's did in the late 90's.

Re: Star Wars: The Complete Saga On Blu-Ray Breaks Worldwide Sales Rec

That's more because of the prevalence of downloadable media today in comparison to when DVD was first getting started. Also, the leap in audio/visual quality from DVD to Blu-ray isn't as extreme as was the leap from VHS to DVD, so there isn't as much of a rush to adopt the new format.

When DVD came out, people upgraded their entire film collections. With Blu-ray, most are content to keep most of their DVDs and only upgrade the films/TV shows they like the most.

Re: Star Wars: The Complete Saga On Blu-Ray Breaks Worldwide Sales Rec

The price of Blu-rays seem to be dropping like a stone lately. It makes me think that ultra HD (4320p) is probably just a couple of years away.

Exactly. I know why BR has been slow to take off, which is why I'm surprised a BR set is selling so well. Though breaking a BR record is probably not too difficult at this point, and if anything will to so it's Star Wars.

I've heard people speculate that regular DVD's will outlast BR's unless drastic action is taken to essentially make people buy BR's. But that is a discussion for another thread!

Re: Star Wars: The Complete Saga On Blu-Ray Breaks Worldwide Sales Rec

That's good. And may I say well-deserved. Let people bitch and whine all they want about the (actually rather inconsequential) changes

So, you hate the TOSR for also providing the original broadcast versions.

Re: Star Wars: The Complete Saga On Blu-Ray Breaks Worldwide Sales Rec

I'd be interested in an unaltered, OT release, in part to see just how many hardcore, originals-only fans there actually are.

Re: Star Wars: The Complete Saga On Blu-Ray Breaks Worldwide Sales Rec

Hmm, I'd be interested to see the figures for the separate OT and PT sets, and which one sold more...

Well, considering the OT set is in the top ten and the PT set isn't, we can infer that the OT set sold more.

For those wondering

Star Wars Saga week 1 sold 515,000 units

LOTR extended week 1 sold 336,441 units.

LOTR theatricals week 1 sold 188,878 units.

Or perhaps they didn't press as many of the latter, and are now sold out.

Nope, I believe you are correct.

BR sales are low not just because of people getting stuff offline but also because the economy is in the shitter.
