Why do people hate heavy and old actors?

I see this all the time. "Oh my god, did he get old." "Oh my god, did he get fat." Who cares? Everyone of us will be old and fat sooner or later as well.

And we only have Palpatine's word on how corrupt the Republic was and really he engineered the corruption to allow himself to gain control of the senate.

Exactly. The only reason the Republic was so corrupt was because Palpatine made it that way. He was an expert at manipulation behind the scenes. Everything was his doing. It's not the Republic's fault that it fell - just his. That's just what Sith do.

The Republic was very corrupt for a long time; some of it was the secret Sith like Plageuis and Sidious at work, but a lot of it was the natural state of affairs.

Yeah, the Old Republic had been in a state of deterioration for quite some time before Darth Plagueis and Sidious/Palpatine launched their plots to further undermine the galaxy and seize power. The Sith Lords of the Prequel timeframe and shortly beforehand simply took advantage of an already-decaying system, accelerated the decline of the Republic and its institutions and caused their collapse much sooner than it would have happened otherwise.

All I know is the the Jedi come across as grossly incompetent in the prequel trilogy. Which I find worse than them being as corrupt as the Sith.

That was intentional, though. The Jedi were flawed. They were so bound by tradition and history that they were unable to change or react to the threat that they faced. I actually just finished the "Dark Lord" novel which is immediately post-ROTS and it says that the Jedi were doomed to die from the start since they bound themselves to a corrupt Republic rather than serving the Force. That's why Yoda and Obi-Wan go into hiding at the end of ROTS because they realize that everything they stood for was a failure, and they have to step aside and let Anakin's children find a new path.

They weren't incompetent. They were more concerned about the smaller picture: the dangers posed to the safety of the citizenry and they overlooked the larger dangers, the overall political state of the Republic. They didn't think it was possible the Sith could have infiltrated the Republic and turned it against them. Their previous experience had all been the Sith amassing their forces and attacking them directly.

I think the bigger problem was just that they were incredibly dull. As a kid I always imagined them being much more cool and badass than Lucas eventually made them in the prequels.

Some of the Jedi in the Prequels and The Clone Wars were a little disappointing and underwhelming, but at least we got to see them lead Clone units into battle in a major galactic war. There was some serious carnage and drama in both of the animated series dating back to the Tartakovsky microseries (which featured master swordsman Mace Windu at arguably his most badass in the entire Lucas canon).

So, not to be indelicate... but have Hamill and Fisher lost any weight at all for the movie? I know there were some stories last year that they had been assigned personal trainers, and the studio wanted them to slim down some, but from most of the pics I see online it doesn't look like they really have.

Which seems a bit odd to me. Even if they're gonna be hidden under robes and cloaks, I would think the actors themselves would still want to look as good as they could in the movie (and yes I realize it's kinda bizarre to be discussing the weight of people in their 60s, but we are talking about Luke and Leia here, and it'd be nice if they at least looked a little like their old selves. Lol)

She, and Vader, looked good and healthy enough on The Big Bang Theory.

And Hamill looks good, too.

Besides, Leia will be at least 30 years older than she was at the end of Return of the Jedi. Leia was supposed to be about 24 years old at the conclusion of the OT and I don't know very many people of either sex who look the same in their mid-to-late fifties as they did when they were fresh out of college. Carrie's cleaned herself up in recent years and deserves credit for overcoming a lot of addiction and dependency problems that hampered her health and appearance.

I wouldn't be too concerned with it.

I thought that with the advent of the CGI Clone Wars series, the Tartakovsky microseries was no longer in the canon?

I keep hearing different opinions on the canon status of the Tartakovsky microseries from a decade ago, but maybe the whole thing's been jettisoned at this point and now the Cartoon Network/Netflix series has completely taken its place. It'd be a bit of a shame if the entire microseries was dumped. Many of the old mini-sodes were awesome and well-paced, and Durge the bounty hunter was one of the most impressive characters introduced into the Clone Wars timeline.

In other news, the Boba Fett standalone movie may have run into some creative and developmental problems.

^Meh. As the article points out, anti-heroes are tough to pull off in any context, let alone in a context where said anti-hero has been a popular favorite for over three decades without actually DOING ANYTHING (canonically, at least).

Maybe I'm crazy, but I'm very optimistic about the whole Disney-Era Star Wars endeavour. I think they've learned a lot from the Marvel Cinematic Universe about how to steer such a high-profile franchise, so the Boba Fett movie may be running into problems now, but it's still really early in the development cycle. We'll see Episode VII long before we see Boba Fett. I think we'll be fine.

Just take the Michael Corleone approach (with a more family-friendly twist). Michael descends into darkness and does some pretty horrible things in his life as Don of his crime family and empire, but he's still the cleanest and most honorable Mafioso in the Godfather Trilogy with the arguable exception of his late father. All the other crime families and antagonists are dirtier, nastier and more violent and stoop to even more illegal and destructive behavior in their war with the Corleones.

Boba's an anti-hero with his own unique and finely-honed personal code of honor that he strictly follows. He's not a good guy in the traditional sense, but he looks good and is the protagonist compared to most of the people he deals with.
