Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

I hope the new era at Lucasfilm will usher in some amazing games, but I just don't know. 1313 was in development and planned for release with a whole lot of fans clammoring to get their hands on it and explore the gritty underbelly of the Star Wars universe and then all those plans were torpedoed with the Disney takeover. Like I said, some SW games are crap but others are fantastic and now there's a lot of concern over the quality of future games to come out of the new regime.

We'll see. I wouldn't buy them brand new right off the store shelf anyways (I almost always give any game a test run before I decide to buy it, no matter which franchise) but it'd be nice to know that even if I got a new SW game secondhand from a gaming store for half-price that it didn't blow.

Thanks for that link. They are making a big mistake IMO by not shooting this film in IMAX. Regarding 3-D - I'm glad it's not - it's way overused at this point.

CC's right. Episode III was shot entirely on digital cameras, as was Episode II. Before now, the last Star Wars movie to be shot on regular film stock of any sort was Episode I and you can see the difference in the cinematic looks of The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones though the two films were just a few short years apart.

That said, I'm glad they're going back to actual film stock for Episode VII. Lucas, Kennedy and Abrams want the new movie to look more like the Original Trilogy did on the big screen and I can't say I blame them. II and III looked sharp and amazing but there's just something that's hard to define and condense in a handful of words about the way the OT looked on a big screen and even on a television that sets it apart from most of the others filmed since.

Abrams is generally a fan of "old school" filmmaking anyway. Given the option, he'd rather use film and lighting and real sets than anything digital or CGI. Granted, he's been doing much BIG science fiction lately than CGI is inevitable, but I know he only likes to use it when necessary.

So they are going to play 35 MM films in IMAX theaters or convert 35MM to IMAX? Because I'd imagine that theater owners will demand IMAX copies of the film - if only because they earn more in ticket sales.

Also, Disney would be stupid to not also release IMAX versions for the same reason above.

I thought TPM overall looked better and more vivid than either AOTC or ROTS.

Me too, actually. I think AOTC and ROTS look great and they're aesthetically gorgeous movies to focus one's eyeballs on, but Episode I just plain looks better. Something about those occasional bursts of grain and celluloid artifacts that fly by as you're watching the film just makes The Phantom Menace feel like a warmer, more traditional movie experience and I've said for many years now that Episode I is the most like the Original Trilogy, and not just in the style of storytelling and the pacing.

I'm gonna throw in my agreement here as well. Ep I visually just feels more "real" for some reason.

Jack Reynor cast in the new film?

If this would turn out to be true his physical appearance would really lend itself well to playing a character like Jacen Solo. He has a little bit of a Harrison Ford quality to his looks.

My only exposure to the post-RotJ stuff has been the Jedi Knight games. So I really want Kyle Katarn to appear.

Another agreement from me. TPM felt like a much more like a classically made film than AOTC and ROTS. There is one digital scene in TPM, though. If memory serves, it's the one with Anakin and Qui-Gon on Anakin's balcony. Anakin talks about the stars and wanting "to be the first one to see'em all!" before Qui-Gon takes a bit of Anakin's blood to test for the midichlorians.

Love the interview with JW. His music is what got me into film scores to begin with. Heck, I was so obsessed with his work that, a few years ago, I went through my CDs for all six films and remixed the major themes and cues into 18 medleys. That was a fun project.

I cannot wait to hear what he comes up with for the next film(s)!

You may be right, and coincidentally it's also a scene that George went back to shoot at the very end of principal photography, right before the movie went off to be edited together for release. I recall Lucas or McCallum stating in the DVD extras for Episode I that they were worried the audience would notice that Jake Lloyd was about a year or so older and bigger in the balcony scene than he was in all the other Anakin footage shot for the film due to Lloyd experiencing a growth spurt at that time. Knowing George he probably just CGI'ed that scene together to save time and get the film to the post-production editors so everything would be finished.

Speaking of post-production ... and John Williams ... I am looking forward to Williams having the opportunity to see the film before scoring it - something he wasn't entirely able to do for the PT, particularly with AOTC. Lucas was cutting the film right up to the days before its release, so they tracked a lot of the score from TPM into the final act. Listening to Williams talk about his love of being surprised when watching the film the first time, and how that helps him craft his scores, really drives that point home. I'm guessing Abrams will give Williams much more to work with than Lucas.

Look at how integral and dominant the soundtracks for the last two Trek films were to and within the movies themselves. When I think J.J. Trek I think of how the music and many scenes are inseparable and how well Abrams integrated Michael Giacchino into the films to the point where the films often seemed like huge symphonies that just happened to have special effects and actors.

I'm looking forward to seeing how Abrams will integrate John Williams and his classic SW music into the new film.
