Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

New poster revealed at D23:

The most interesting part of the poster is of course Finn holding a lightsaber.

Not just any lightsaber - that looks Luke's original lightsaber.

What I really like is that Rey is the most prominent character. I hope that means she's the lead for the new trilogy.

Actually I'm not sure that is Luke's lightsaber. The detail on the top end looks a bit different to me (unless Struzan just didn't paint it quite right).

And I have to admit, part of me was kinda hoping Rey was the one who'd be wielding a lightsaber in this movie (just because a female Jedi as the main character seems like it would be a bit more cool and different).

Either way though, it's definitely a very cool looking poster.

I'm pretty sure that staff of hers is an ancient light saber staff. I believe she searches for ancient jedi relics. I think the idea of the old republic will be introduced in this trilogy.

Yeah, I just saw that confirmed on Facebook. It's a special poster created specifically for D23 and there'll be another, official movie poster released at some later date. Still, it looks amazing.
I find the lack of Luke, Leia and Poe Dameron disturbing, though.

If they're smart they'll put them on the official movie poster that's released right before the movie premieres.

I think Finn and Rey will both eventually end up wielding lightsabers in this new trilogy.
With the way she is posed in between Kylo and Finn, I'd say it is a good bet that she is going to represent a third "grey" path walking along the edge of the dark side, or that they'll both be fighting to win her to their side.

I am aware, I'm just saying I doubt their arrangement is coincidental. Han Solo looks thrown in there for the sake of including him compared to the rest of the composition.

I doubt that the re-introduction of Luke and Leia would be in a poster for an expo that can only be found online thanks to pictures taken of it.
They're either gonna release big high-res images as new promo-shots, or we will first see them in the new trailer.

I just realized, I haven't commented on the poster yet. I love it. I was a little surprised Han was the only character from the original trilogy we got on it, but they really do seem to be trying to promote the new characters more right now. I'm hoping by the time we've gotten the official final poster we'll get Leia or at least the droids. I'm really glad to see they got Drew Struzan to do this one for them, I really hope they can get him to do the final one too.

He's done at least one official theatrical poster for each of the previous films, hasn't he? Even the Ewok TV-movie artwork from the mid-80s looks like it might have been done by Struzan.

If he did posters for every other Episode in the Saga then I hope he's the artist who creates the final theatrical poster before the movie premieres.

Was it really that bad? Because the director is apparently on Episode 9!

It wasn't bad as far as nostalgia trips go, but Trevorrow's direction was extremely pedestrian.

Yeah as much as I enjoyed Jurassic World I don't remember it having any real distinct style to it. Although the movie DID work a whole lot better than most fourth sequels tend to, and actually managed to make the idea seem kinda fresh and exciting again, so if nothing else he knows the right way to make a big blockbuster type of movie.

He has also done covers for several of the EU novels.
My favorites are The Courtship of Princess Leia and Shadows of the Empire due to the (obvious) non-Star Wars image sources.

Han on Courtship is clearly Harrison in Blade Runner, and the Leia on Shadows is Carrie in Time Guardian. :)

ANA, (All Nippon Airways) Japan's largest airline, is painting its Dreamliner planes flying Tokyo-Vancouver, starting in Rocktober! Pretty cool, I think!

Which, especially given the FF apparent debacle, is exactly what Disney wants.

Drew Struzan: ‘Force Awakens’ May Be The Best ‘Star Wars’ Yet

“I’ve never worked with J.J before and so we started working on it and he showed me like half the movie and it was just… a wonderful film and I know it’s going to be grand. I got to read the script and subsequently I’ve seen half of it and I can tell you and the fans this, Honest to God, it is far and away probably going to be the best Star Wars you’ve ever seen. … Well, it’s beautifully made and it’s a wonderful story. … "
