Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

I really like this aspect of the PT, myself. My problems have always been more with the execution of how it is presented, rather than per se the inclusion of the political content. Frankly, the PT would probably have benefited from Bail Organa being a more prominent character in the first two episodes.
This guy gets it.

I agree. The political content is crucial to Palpatine's rise to power. And I would have loved to seen more of Bail Organa.

Same here. The fans who bitch endlessly about politics, trade routes and Senators either don't understand how the universe of the OT came to be or they're so stubborn and spoiled that they don't care to understand the backstory of the OT era.

It wasn't executed flawlessly and certain aspects could have been handled a lot better, but it made the Star Wars universe more textured and detailed.

I wonder if they had to digitally erase Harrison's earring piercing in his left ear for closeup shots. I don't know if the hole is tiny enough that its unnoticeable when Harrison removes what he's wearing but I don't think any piercing spot is visible in the new trailer.

If not, then it's yet another thing to nitpick. I keep waiting for someone to insert Jar Jar in the new trailer.

If George Lucas was directing, then yeah... But in the real world, not everything has to be fixed with CGI. In movies, there's this thing called a make-up department...

I'll say this: I enjoy quite a few action scenes from the prequels.

The story that's being told is a really good one.

And that brings me to the point that I actually enjoy a great deal of non-action scenes in the prequels as well, such as Palpatine's manipulations to give Vallorum a vote of no confidence. There are a great many scenes that work far better than people remember them.

Despite that, there are a great many scenes where characters are having discussions while sitting on couches. When I was a kid, I was excited seeing Han chase down stormtroopers on the Death Star.. in an awesome space adventure like A New Hope, couches wouldn't fit into the story.

That lines up with my thoughts on the topic as well, so +1 from me.

I agree. Of all my problems with the PT, the political machinations are not one of them. In fact, it would have been more interesting for Bail to have a more prominent role, serving as a competitor to Palpatine (hinted at but not really explored fully) but is ignored due to the crisis of the Seperatists.

Also, Bail is one of my favorite characters in the PT, and really needs more screen time. Also, would have loved to see more of Alderaan.

There really are some amazing world-building things in the PT. I really enjoyed the book Star Wars Heresies by Paul McDonald. He does a wonderful job of showing all of the influences for the PT trilogy that George uses and just how deep they really are.

I have a hundred valid nitpicks I could make about the Prequel Trilogy, some of them very annoying to watch. In spite of their flaws, none of them make the Prequels awful films. I've seen far, far worse and more poorly-executed movies since 1999 and from franchises I like almost as much as Star Wars.

There are big-budget sci-fi/fantasy and superhero films released in the past few years that wish they were even half as good as The Phantom Menace.

This is so true. There are some awful films out there.

Speaking of Bail Organa, have you guys seen the Episode I deleted scene where was actually see the character when he was played by another actor and was still referred to as Bail Antilles of Alderaan?

His brief scene begins at around 15:25.

I like the regal white outfits worn by the Alderaan delegation in Episode I but yeah, Jimmy Smits made for a much better and more interesting Bail Organa.

He's also appeared twice on Rebels, once in the flesh (so to speak) and the second time as a hologram. Jimmy Smits didn't provide his voice but they were still good and fun cameos, and with the Rebellion beginning to get underway and becoming a serious factor I imagine they'll be bringing Bail Organa back in some future episodes.

I wouldn't be surprised if we saw him at some point in Rogue One.
