Yeah. I think that maybe having another person to go over the dialogue would have helped. Really just another person to ask if it is really the best idea to just copy-paste the Wrath of Khan ending.I don't hate it, I just wished it had been better. They could have cut the entire Kirk death subplot or at least build up to it better and it would have been perfect. Or it didn't have to rehash the dialogue so much. What was meant to pay homage basically insulted the most revered scene in all of Trek. Have Kirk die, have him make a couple of references to the original dialogue without quoting them verbatim and the scene would have been much more effective.
I really liked the way Khan was used in the movie. I almost wish that he hadn't been the villain or his only goal was stopping Admiral RoboCop. His main motivation was helping his people, so maybe he would have gone to any length to save them. But not go out of his way to kill lots of people. The audience expects him to be evil, it would have been a nice twist.
Both of them felt a lot like Star Wars. I'm pretty sure they helped him get the job because of that.

Be careful though. Trek has a habit of shrinking in the wash, so use cold or warm fandom, not hot. Also, don't mix girdles and toupees.

I think it earned the scene just fine, especially with Kirk's arc. I agree that it should not be so on the nose, but that is a minor quibble.
As for Abrams a director, I agree that he is more than competent to achieve something special with the new Star Wars film. I just am concerned for the more fan boy aspects that could creep in to the making of the film.
In my opinion, Abrams was far enough removed from Star Trek to recognize elements that could make Star Trek fun again without it being too self-referential (for the most part. The Kirk death scene obviously was deliberate homage).
I'm hoping I am wrong, because I think Abrams is a talented director. Hopefully the multiple inputs and limitations placed by the production team will serve as an asset.
Also, I'm impressed by the variety of First Order troopers designed and produced. Interesting that they kept the asymmetrical design in the leg armor.
Also, looking at Ren's saber, it definitely looks pieced together, with an exposed wire an everything. So, the idea of an unstable saber seems sound.
Late to the party as usual. Just saw it. I loved it. It was well done...I just wish there was 30 seconds or so of more footage.
The crashed Star Destroyer, the new storm troopers, the Dark Trooper or whatever that was...it all gave an air of authenticity and world-building that I appreciated. It FELT like Star Wars, as others have said.
I loved seeing Han and Chewie too, but the "We're home," line makes it seem like they're re-entering the Falcon after a long time, like it was put into mothballs or something. Confusing, since I thought the ship had upgrades. But that part totally lacks context, so who knows what they're really talking about?

That's what I initially thought as well.
There is a lot we can think up with what little we have seen. The main difference this time is we don't know where the story has to go. Back when TPM came out, we knew it had to eventually get to the fall of Anakin Skywalker and the birth of Darth Vader. We did not now how that was going to happen (we all had out own ideas before that film came out). But this time? I have no idea were this is going. One assumes to more Jedi and somehow freedom for the Galaxy under a new government. But that could be totally wrong.
The only question my friend had that threw me completely, was "what about Jar Jar?" The only thing I could say was, "Well is has been about 65 years since TPM in story...he might be dead by now. Or he could be on the new Senate. Don't know. Don't know how log Gungan live." (I will note he is probably the largest Jar Jar fan in the world outside of anyone working for Lucasfilm)

Jar Jar died in a freak accident when the antigravs in his floaty Senate chamber kiosk thing stopped functioning during a speech he was giving. He was squished in the fall.
There were whispers that Emperor Palpatine did it with the Force, but those remain unconfirmed. Everyone who perpetuated this rumor was force-choked by Vader. So it remains a mystery to this day.
For what it's worth the ”Dark Trooper” has been called a Chrometrooper by some fans ever since his first image was released. I kind of like that name even if it's unofficial and that's not what anyone in the film calls him.

Yeah the whole, "wait that's a real bot?!" is something else. The first teaser we were thinking, "oh great, a cute CG droid..." but its real. You could touch it, hear it roll, and all that. It can bump into stuff on set if someone messed up. That tech seems impressive for what is basically a tiny movie prop turned into a character.
But then R2-D2 was a mix of RC tech and Kenny Baker way back in the 70s. So it has been almost 40 years of tech advancement to get us this tiny droid.

He/She will die in some comedy pratfall and look completely incompetent but oddly have a reputation as a badass?
Will have a huge reputation for being a badass before we every see whoever it is actually doing stuff. And depending on how the first movie does, will have a score of spin off materials and probably some author that makes a whole backstory and even cultural references based on them having chrome armor and capes. All with only a few lines spoken on screen. Then in the next film be killed in a cheap way, then come back to be awesome in a dozen novels and games.
