Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

This could potentially be the greatest Star Wars film since Empire. Maybe not, but what I'm seeing and hearing so far is very impressive and J.J. and Lawrence Kasdan seem like they want to shake up the Lucas universe with this story.

Be careful...many said the same thing when 60 Minutes previewed The Phantom Menace trailer back in '99. People were howling and crying over it.

We all know how that turned out.

Now it's really evident how much the guy loves and respects Star Wars and how much he didn't care for Star Trek (or Mission Impossible, for that matter).

...what?! ...I don't want to know the bullshitanswer, do I? So please don't expand on your thoughts.

I wonder if BB-8 represents the end of R2-D2 and C-3PO in the movies?
I figure that BB-8 is the droid of one of the new characters while R2 is sticking around with Luke and 3PO is around Leia and Han most of the time. I'd imagine that they may kill off a character, but the droids would probably get a pass just because they could be rebuilt. Both have already been shot and torn apart already without lasting damage.

It's a different time now. Back then Lucas crapped out a script in a single draft and no one shot down any of his ideas because he made Star Wars and any new Star Wars would be an instant hit.

Now we've sat through three terrible movies that were more focused on showing as many special effects as ILM could handle without any regard to it making sense. Now that Disney owns it, they want it to make money and keep making money for as long as possible. So they hire a director who is passionate about the series and writers who can actually write a coherent story. Lucasfilm seems to be completely aware of the fan reaction to the prequels and are going out of their way to correct a lot of complaints. They're going back to puppets, real sets and original tone of movies. It may not be the best movie ever made, but at the very least it's going to be serviceable story that appeals to both the original fans and general audiences. Keep both groups happy and they're willing to come back for more and buy merchandise. If it sucks as much as Phantom Menace, all this positive fan response will dry up and Disney will have wasted a few billion dollars.

It struck me as trying too hard, I mean the line, "Chewie, we're home" was a bit too "Decades-after reunion episode," and didn't seem to come from out of any narrative sense. Han is in his 80s or whatever, does some ship he owned decades ago really matter to him any more than the first car I had as a teenager does?

Hey it was neat like, made me sniff a bit too, but obviously tying to pander. If this movie didn't have "Star Wars" attached to it you wouldn't care less about it.

Same could be said of TOS Kirk and the Enterprise.
