Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

Amazingly cool second teaser.

Favorite moment? A VAST COLOSSAL CRASHED STAR DESTROYER SITTING IN THE DESERT. I loved that slow tracking shot slowing revealing more and more of it until you finally see it's a G-D S-D!!!

I was so fixated on the Star Destroyer, I missed the crashed X-Wing in the foreground. My seven-year old pointed out to me.

Minor minor nit: I really wish Han had been wearing his classic outfit. That would have made it perfect.

Might be a bit smelly after 30 years...

LUKE
You're wrong, Leia. You have that power too. In time you'll learn to
use it as I have. The Force is strong in my family. My father has
it...I have it...and...my sister has it.

All true, and I could easily have succumbed to the excitement, but that was intriguing to re-work the lines in that manner to me. They could be using that tried and true misdirection, to get us to speculate about the meaning and identity of "the hand".

This could potentially be the greatest Star Wars film since Empire.
I'm sure it will be. I mean, STiD is as good as any of the prequils and probably Jedi too. So all Abrams really has to do is better himself a little and he's done it.

That said, I think he's going to knock it out of the park. Probably not SW77 or Empire territory but certainly in the ballpark of TDK, Avatar, and whatnot.

It'll certainly be better than Prometheus!
Lol

So where does that Darth Vader Helmet come from? Given it's not actually one piece? (or am I misremembering this?)

It'll be the best Star Wars film since Saving Private Ryan.

(a little in-joke for Bill Simmons fans)

As per the Darth Vader helmet, it was two pieces, but they may have melded in the industrial sized funeral pyre that Luke lit at the end of RoTJ

My thoughts (some already addressed upthread):

  • Luke's lines are all from "Return of the Jedi" albeit a bit edited.
  • I think the crashed Star Destroyer and X-wing is one of the coolest visuals ever.
  • I am so looking forward to Oscar Isaac's character, Poe(? - the X-Wing pilot). Love him in Inside Llewyn Davis. One of my favorite young actors working today.
  • I'm a little sad that it appears we apparently only see Luke and Leia from angles we don't see their faces.
  • Are Luke and Artoo on Mustafar?
  • The burnt out Vader helmet? VERY cool.
  • BB-8 (the little rolly droid) is awesome. I want one.
  • It's nice to see Chewie look like Chewie. I don't know what they were doing with him in Revenge of the Sith.

Man, and you have to hand it to John Williams! the man is in his 80's and he has not lost a thing, music sounds as great as ever mixed with those classic queue's.

Amen to that. Three or four horn notes and you're hooked. Quite impressive.

Considering its half melted it looks like what was left after his funeral pyre in ROTJ. Still could be two parts just put to together.

i see this shot and i cry tears of joy

Yeah, that's what I figured.

Some talk out of SWCA that the sand planet isn't anywhere we've seen before. That's a good thing imo.

It is almost magical the way his music can bring me back to my childhood and my first memories of seeing the OT in the 70's and 80's. There is no composer in the world that can hold a candle to this guy.

So much stronger than the first teaser it's absurdly good.

The Star Destroyer shot, Luke's voiceover and hand?

New Star Destroyer! (And one that I can't help but think was partly influenced by the Legacy comics design too, going by the briefly seen aesthetics.)

Kylo Ren. As an art image, he looks a bad caricature, but in motion, in the trailer - very effective.

BB-8 - there's going to be a run on plushes of that droid in December!

New Empire - with new but consistent sense of design that invokes the old and then moves onto the new.

Didn't care much about this after the first teaser, but this one? Oh yeah.
