Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

Lucas tended to have good ideas...eventually, after a good edit or five. The world building is impressive to say the least about it. Star Wars turned out as a great film due to the editing (thank the then Lucas' wife). They got an award for that.

I was reading the news on Rotten Tomatoes this week saying that Tatiana Maslany is testing (Along with Roony Mara and Falicity Jones) for a new lead role in a Star Wars spin off. I would watch that spin off if Maslany got the part. Anything to make her most noticed is a good thing.

Yeah, I saw that. I would love to see her get it, she definitely deserves more exposure.

I'm seriously worried about the prospects of spinoffs. I've repeatedly made my suggestion of a "Seven Samurai meets The Alamo" story on this forum and others and I really think they should be careful about just telling origin stories (or, more likely, origin trilogies).

Star Wars creator George Lucas has admitted his ideas for a new trilogy of films were ignored by studio Disney after he sold all rights to the long-running space opera saga in October 2012.

The film-maker told USA Today last week that he planned to shoot the seventh movie in the long-running space opera saga - since retooled by JJ Abrams as Star Wars: The Force Awakens - and release it in May this year.

He also provided treatments for three new films. But in a new interview with Cinema Blend Lucas revealed that none of his ideas made the final screenplay for Abrams’ debut turn in the director’s chair.

“The ones that I sold to Disney, they came up to the decision that they didn’t really want to do those,” said Lucas. “So they made up their own. So it’s not the ones that I originally wrote [on screen in Star Wars: The Force Awakens].”

That was obvious from moment they let Arndt go. It's probably for the best since they still have Kasdan as one of the writers.

I have faith that Kasdan's involvement in the film is going to make it better. He didn't participate in any of the three Prequels and hasn't helped write and craft a Star Wars film in more than 30 years so I doubt he'd have jumped aboard Episode VII were it a really mediocre story idea that the fans wouldn't like. It's no guarantee that the film will be epic on the level of Hope or Empire (or even Jedi) but Kasdan's presence makes me feel like we'll be getting the best story and movie they can make.

So anybody notice the Force Awakens easter egg in Marvel's Star Wars #1?

One of the aliens imprisoned by the Empire is the practical FX alien that walked by Abrams in the first Force For Change video

I look at the EU like Marvels comic history. Just because a writer/director in a Marvel film pulls a name out of their database doesn't mean he has to use every single thing written for that char in their comic history.

I'm hoping that if Abrams tries to do something really out of line Kasdan will just tase him.

And then Abrams will be all like "Don't tase me bro!" and Kasdan will be like "I'm not your bro" and just keep on tasing.

I was going to start a thread asking if anyone who see the film on opening weekend. as for me the answer no. the place will just be overcrowded and I will become paranoid. I will see the film a week or 2 later.

right now, there is just too hype about the film ,its almost scary.

I'd hope that Kasdan would call out somebody else on their bad story ideas and not let himself get bossed and pushed around, but whatever the relationship he had with J.J. I just hope a good script came out of it.

Depending on where you see it it'll likely be just as crowded a week or two later. You'll just be there surrounded by all the other people who had the same idea.

I almost never see movies in theaters anymore, let alone on opening weekend. The last time I did that actually may have been "Revenge of the Sith." Or "Return of the King." Whichever one came out last.

I usually wait for movies to come out on home video or be streamed, but with Trek and Star Wars I make sure to see the new films on the big screen at least once before they make the transition to a home viewing format.

I usually see the BIG movies in theaters, but only if I can find someone to see them with. I don't enjoy going alone, and I work nights and weekends, so it's not easy finding people with compatible schedules for movie-going.

I'll go see a new movie by myself if I have to, but I usually prefer to go with at least one friend so we can talk about the movie before and after we've watched it and bounce jokes and opinions off one another.

I'm not usually a huge fan of crowded theaters either, but sitting among a wild and incredibly excited audience waiting in anticipation for the SEs and TPM to start was just way too much damn fun, and some of my fondest moviegoing experiences ever. There's no way I would want to miss out on that with this new movie, especially with the Big Three involved in a big way again.

I imagine the excitement level in that theater is going to be off the charts.

I must admit that seeing the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special in theaters was an incredibly fun experience. Packed house, sonic screwdrivers everywhere...

I agree. People cheered during the Fox fanfare for the SEs and TPM when I went. People cheered at Artoo's first appearance...it was really something. By II and III it had been lessened but it sure was neat to see it the first time 'round.

The excitement around seeing the first prequel in the theater was palpable and most of the people with me we're having a lot of fun even if the film itself disappointed them. It was a major cultural event in recent American history.
