Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

going back to the whole Empire thing and ignoring the horrible EU, While chaos could follow the death of Vader, Palpatine and the loss of the Death Star 2.0 and embolden some systems to rise up...The Empire staying around in some capacity seems likely to me.

All those Admirals, Moffs, Commanders etc though I would assume maybe an internal civil war for power could occur furthering the Rebel Alliance. I would love to see the face of the Empire be someone like Thrawn (one of the few god things about the EU) though the whole Alien thing could relegate him to number 2 behind someone else. I would also like to see the official name being the "Alliance" and dropping the Rebel bit and some point during this next trilogy we get the New Republic form.

I know nothing of pro soccer either, but Pele is a very well-known athlete. He's one of those rare people that transcended their field.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Jax, that's pretty much what exactly happens in the "Horrible" Bantam-era post-ROTJ Expanded Universe.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

<<However the Empire still retaliated. Remember the new ending scenes in Star Wars VI where they topple the Emperor statue on Coruscant?
Well.. the Empire didn't stood by idly.. they opened fire turning that public place into their own version of the Tian An Men massacre.>>

What book/story was this established in? Obviously it was something published after March 1997 when the Special Edition came out.

For those who don't know Sidious' Battle Meditation and the collapse of the Empire was established all the way back in 1991's Heir to the Empire. They just didn't use the term BM back then.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

That was one of the X-wing novels (Wedge's Gamble). I think it was mentioned while Wedge and Rogue Squadron are on Coruscant preparing for the Alliance's invasion. The group visits some places with Imperial propaganda and other news stories of the last three or so years since the Battle of Endor. Darth Vader is still considered a Hero of the Empire, having fallen defending his Emperor, if I recall correctly.

As for the Battle Meitation, some of the later EU mentions that one of the Grand Admirals on the Second Death Star was the one doing the battle meditation and that the loss of a few Grand Admirals on the Death Star and the general loss of fleet communications due to the loss of both the Death Star and Executor resulted in mess for the Imperial Fleet. Parts of it ran away, parts of it fought on for hours. Some regrouped for a counter attack. Some regrouped and attempted to assess the situation with Coruscant. Other went back to their own territories and carved out their own little Empires, or plotted to take over as the new Emperor.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

The Battle Meditation thing never worked for me because if you watch the actual film, the battle turns in the Rebels' favor before Palpatine is killed.

I think Zahn was trying to retroactively make the Luke/Vader/Palpatine thing more important to the events going on around them, but in the larger film story that includes the PT, that confrontation becomes the main event.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

The Battle turns basically in the Rebel's favor when Luke rejects the Dark Side/Emperor and tosses his lightsaber aside. It is right at this point that the shield generator blows up and the Rebel fighter rush the Death Star. The Imperial fleet starts to lose after the Emperor's death, the Executor being destroyed while Luke is dragging Vader to the hanger bay.

The fight on Endor itself seems to be based on Palpatines over confidence in his stormtroopers verses primative Ewoks (Lucas' parallel to the Viet Cong defeating the US Army I suppose). It seems that Palpatine actually didn't care if the Ewoks were winning. he probably saw that coming as well, just didn't care as long as he got Skywalker to join the Dark Side. When Luke rejected him, that's when things fell apart. The smug Paplatine lost it and just went for the gloating kill. The Death Star could just blow the planet up now for all he cared. At least he still had Vader...right?

But what's that compared to the power of the Force.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

The cutesy ball droid made me roll my eyes (and question the mechanics of it) and the overlong shot of it almost seemed to be daring me to bitch about it, but everything else looks pretty awesome.

Yeah, the droid design and the "cutsey" noises it made brought back horrifying Ep:1 memories.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

It'd be very hard to be a more annoying Star Wars character than Jar Jar Binks. This new droid would have to play the Dubstep version of "Jedi Rocks" or have its own catchphrase (don't ask, I'm sure they could come up with one if they were drunk or high enough) to be the Voit- or Wilson-brand version of Jar Jar.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Oh, I hope it becomes the short-round of the movie or even the new trilogy!

Honestly, it was just minor feeling of a Lucas-ian type of CGI-cutseyness nonsense but I actually think J.J. is much better than that and the shot was nothing more than a touch of CGI/tech wankery.

Present-day insane Lucas doing these movies, yeah, I'd be worried. But J.J. I think is going to do okay with the movies and won't resort to such silly, cutesy, nonsense.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

That's the general feeling I get from watching the teaser. If the cuddliest things in his two Trek movies were Keenser and a tribble I think we're gonna be in good directorial and screenwriting hands.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Completely random out there premonition I just received through the Force - Gwendoline Christie's character is Luke's daughter. He tried to train her in the force and she went to the dark side, spurring the resurrection of the sith. This is what cast Luke into exile, and leads to a role reversal of the "I am your father" scene.

I have no basis for this, but I think I'm onto something here, especially with Christie being Lukes daughter. The whole blonde hair, blue eyes Nazi poster boy thing.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

My problem with the soccer ball droid wasn't the cutesy factor, it was just with the ugly design and strange proportions. Who knows, maybe it'll grow on me, or maybe in it's un-rolled up form it'll look a lot cooler, but right now it's just not working for me at all.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Someone already got a tattoo of the rolling droid

How about

A few pages back I was talking about the naturalism of the acting in the original technology, the subtle things that make it work. Watching Empire, there is something about how that movie is made that is very different from how movies today are made, even films like The Dark Knight that have these relatively grim endings.

So, I'm specifically referring to a scene at the end of the film, after they fail to rescue Han form the bounty hunter. You know that this film won't have the same pat ending the first film had. Now they just want to escape from the city, and so htey go to another docking platform to get to the Falcon. Notice how that's executed.. instead of having dark, grim music, the music is actually beautiful. It's soaring and romantic. And the shots used, especially the wide shots where we see the Falcon on screen left and the docking hangar doors on screen right, and laser bolts zipping across the screen at dusk.. it's a soaring moment, and it's not just about what is happening on the screen, about the romance (not in a love sense, but in a more stylistic sense) and this music swells to unlike anything I've heard before or since. Artoo does have a bit of heroics here: all he can do is cause some kind of conduit to leak smoke but it was just enough to buy them seconds to escape, but it is still a moment that is played with great heroics... notice the music.

It's apparent that, with the new trailer, JJ gets Star Wars, that tone, look, and feel are more important to get across in the marketing than anything else, but I hope he knows that tone in Star Wars can be elusive and counter-intuitive, as it is in the scene I described above.

I love that sequence. The music you describe is such a thrill to listen to.

This is Adywan's take.
