Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Seemed like a lot of fan wank and CGI to me. The Empire is still around...how original, JJ.

 so it begins... ;)

That looked like models to me touched up with CGI.

It does look and sound like they'll be using more practical effects and models, which is good. But I'll just point out that GL would have gotten ripped for the CGI Falcon and cute droid in the trailer. I still worry that this film is JJ playing in the SW toybox instead of creating something new...that has been his MO as a movie director.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

That was a great teaser, although I am a little disappointed we didn't see the big three at all. It's just great to get even a small glimpse of this version universe.

Like everyone else, I'm dying to see the Big Three again, but I'm actually kind of glad they didn't show up in the teaser. To me that implies that they're not simply banking on nostalgia and they feel this movie can stand on it's own.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Fuck!
Who is that voice? Sounds a bit like Palapatine or Benedict Cumberbatch.

Not the most impressive teaser though.

Still, didn't need that hand cream.

**takes pants off the computer and puts them back on himself**

Agree with that part at least. Left decidedly 'meh' about it.

The exhaust ports or whatever they are on that Sith's lightsabre caused a massive eyeroll. Would have sent it to the spice mines of Kessel if not for that final section with the Falcon. That saved the teaser from being completely unremarkable.

That said it hasn't done anything to dampen my excitement for the movie, it just hasn't really raised it either.

That's also the MO of franchises. If you want originality, try something that is not yet another continuation of a story that's already been told.

Don't get me wrong - I understand the desire to have it both ways, to love a certain universe and want to see it progress in an interesting way. But, let's be honest here, when that happens it's extremely rare. The entire reason a studio invests in a franchise is to keep telling the same type of story over and over again, because the audience will keep paying for it. What are people excited about in this trailer? Seeing the Falcon again. They want to see it do Falcon-y type things again.

But it's hard to go home again. Might they pull off a movie or two that's fairly decent in this trilogy - sure, it could happen. But nostalgia is never the same thing as seeing Star Wars when you were 7 for the first time, much as you might want it to be.

'Course it's easy for me to be practical about Star Wars, which, as far as I'm concerned was 2 good movies a long time ago that I like okay, but that I can pretty much take or leave. Yet, somehow no matter how often I swear off of going to see the pitiful Abrams Trek movies - I still ponied up for that icky, stupid rehash of Khan.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I wonder why we didn't see any Luke, Han, Leia, R2 or Threepio-just the new stars (Boyega, Ridley, the ball droid, possibly Driver and whoever the X-wing pilot is). We of course got the X-wings/Falcon/TIE fighter/Stormtroopers/Sith but none of the classic heroes. Unless of course one of them is the Sith/Dark Jedi/Inquisitor/whatever seen in the trailer.

Other observations

-Seems like Boyega might switch sides on Tatooine and join
the good guys. Presumabely he's being chased by the Empire for crossing over, as we hear the Probe Droid in the distance. Or maybe it's a case of borrowing the Trooper outfit ala Luke and Han in the original.

-The Sith lord or dark side character on a wooded/snow area kind of reminds me of one of those The Old Republic commercials.

-Stormtroopers in the carrier kind of seems a bit reminiscent of some of the Clone Wars stuff where we see them in a similar way in the gunships. Except it looks like these troopers are practical.

-As for the CG, I've noticed a troubling trend among some directors and producers where they say that something will have more practical sets than CGI, but the trailer and finished film seems the exact opposite. This is what happened with Indiana Jones and the Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull (I think Spielberg said it), and it looks like it might happen with Jurassic World and this film as well. Granted, the CG here looks a bit more polished than JW.

NOW SQUEAL BITCHES

I gotta say, other than the ridiculous and impractical looking "crucifix lightsabre," that trailer looked pretty damn good. More "real Star Wars" in that 90 secs than anything Lucas vomited out in all three of the prequels.

Because to me that trailer is actually more about the sound that the look -

Classic music, T-fighter sound, X-wing, Lightsabre, Falcon.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Like others I was hoping for at least a glimpse of Han or Luke, but still, what we got was MORE than impressive.

And yeah the X-wings and Falcon might have looked a bit more CG than we were promised, but when the scenes look THAT cool and that well-executed I can easily live with it.

As for the general look of the film, you can definitely see some of JJ's more dynamic style in this than with previous SW movies, but it still felt to me very much like SW, thankfully.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

And yeah, I did spot a few lens flares, but they were MUCH more subtle than anything in the Trek movies. :p

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Looks very good! I think JJ really captured that Star Wars look and feel.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I loved the trailer. That being said... is it bad I thought of Spaceballs when the African-American storyteller came onscreen?

I thought it was a fan film/parody! Now I'm trying to process it lol

^I had *exactly* the same reaction. Not sure why but it felt very fan-filmy....which I suppose it is, technically. Maybe this is what J.J. has been trying to hide beneath all those lens-flairs? ;)

Boyega is ENGLISH!!!:klingon: ...;)
Sorry! *sheepish smile*

It does make sense that the Empire is equal opportunity, but since this came after Spaceballs was established, it's funny. I keep hearing Tim Russ... "we ain't found shit!"

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Yeah, all I thought of too :)

Gets a big meh from me. Obviously it's not really a teaser trailer, not in the sense of the recent Avengers 2 & Jurassic World ones which actually give you things to be excited for. It just felt like 5 or 6 random shots.

Sorry, I'm just not so easily excited.
Espeically by a shot of some sand and a random black guy. Give me a quick shot of Han & Chewie in the cockpit, Luke with his lightsabre, R2 & 3PO arguing etc, until then I'm not really interested. There's nothing in that you wouldn't just see in some Star Wars PC game trailer.
