Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Holy crap. In that still image you can totally see how fake and glued on those horns look.

Very noticeable indeed. I kind of never noticed however.

It's odd too, because Deep Space Nine was finishing it's run the same year Phantom Menace came out, and the makeup work on that show for races like the Cardassians is just amazing. Sure, there are discrepancies in how recurring character looks form one episode to the other, and I kind of always thought the "spoon" forehead looked like extra clay make-up rolled up, but the ribbing along the neck was always done well.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I still don't understand why Lucas chose to write-off Maul so quickly. All due respect to Lee, but Dooku was a waste of screen time.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Dooku was a good character with a lot of interesting backstory and potential, but Christopher Lee wasn't given nearly enough to do. Sure, he was given more to do than Ray Park was as Darth Maul, but that's not hard considering that almost all of Maul's spoken dialogue was cut from the final edit of Episode I and he's seen only sporadically until the final act of the movie.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

yeah if I could do it all over again, I'd have Maul as the primary villain of all three movies but he talks and is intelligent like Dooku. He kills Qui-Gon and escapes in TPM, he cuts off Anakin's arm in AOTC and leads the Confederacy, then Anakin kills him in the opening of ROTS.

Grevious, of course, remains :D

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Naw. Have him Kill Qui-Gon and then get cut in half (or lets say just his legs) just as he was. Then he comes back half cybernetic in the second film as a proto-Vader, playing Dooku's role and is further injured in the fight that takes Anakin's arm, with Dooku himself playing a part in things under the illusion that he is being primed for Sith-hood behind Maul's back. The opening of RotS happens pretty much like it already did, but Grevious is replaced with a Grevious-ified Maul and Obi-Wan gets to finish him off for good in that ridiculous Lizard/monocycle racing scene.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

the movie might be bland and childish, but that trailer is, was, and will always be amazing!

It was definitely exciting as hell at the time, although now I can't help but notice how much of the cheesy and awful stuff (Jar Jar, the crappy Yoda puppet, a badly acted young Anakin, etc) is already right there and present in the very first teaser.

And of course Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan didn't come across nearly as cool and badass in the actual movie as they did in that teaser, unfortunately.

I think Dooku (or, at least, the basic idea of Dooku) would have worked better had he been introduced in Episode I as a member of the Jedi Council, who then left the order after the death of his protege, Qui-Gon. Instead he kind of just comes from out of nowhere in Episode II.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

And then they wait more than a decade to explain who Sifo-Dyas actually was, which didn't help the whole Dooku backstory very much because you never knew early on if the involvement of Sifo-Dyas was a complete fabrication and his name was being used for sinister blackmail purposes or if he was a renegade Jedi who'd placed the orders for a clone army behind the backs of his superiors and others in positions of power.

We knew he was real because Obi-Wan confirmed his existence and that he'd been killed 10 years earlier, but it took more than a decade and some of the last episodes of The Clone Wars to finally delve into the mystery and find out more about the man and his involvement with the Kaminoan cloning project.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

So, at this stage, is it fair to say a leak is out of the question? :D

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Please help.

I have Apple Trailers for my phone and iPad but both devices are old and I can't download the latest iOS for either device. I am also using a Windows 8 computer with an iTunes program. Will I be able to play the trailer?

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

The lightsaber fight in The Phantom Menace was neat and all, but there was one thing missing that they managed to put back in with Dooku, banter. The old traditional sword fighting banter. Vader used it a lot against Obi-wan and Luke, and the Emperor uses it again Luke during the fight as well. Yet Maul doesn't say anything and Obi-wan and Qui-Gon don't say anything either. I missed having banter. The Attack of the Clones duel had nice banter. It is unfortunate that the good banter in Revenge of the Sith during the Dooku fight was only presented in the novel. That novel makes that fight really cool.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Maul actually spoke more dialogue during the voiceovers for the film's series of "tone poem" TV trailers than he did in the entire actual movie itself. It's a very creepy and effective little trailer, though, and hinted at how much more fleshed-out a character Maul could have been as early as 1999 had he been given more script dialogue.

Last I saw, the Apple Trailer files were just ye olde Quicktime files, so they should play in that or iTunes, yeah.

Didn't watch Clone Wars, can you fill me in on who that was?

Been there, done that.

I am so over banter. It was nice that they dispensed with it for once. And it's usually pretty hackneyed dialogue anyway.

Yeah, I would have definitely loved to have seen more of that Darth Maul.

In fact even with the same basic storyline, I think the movie would have been improved considerably if Maul was simply much more front and center throughout (like Vader all through ESB). It would have added a much needed sense of danger and urgency that is pretty much completely missing in the current movie (and only really shows up in the few scenes that Maul appears).
