Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

In some respects it's the dumbest and worst of all the Blu-ray alterations to the Original Trilogy.

Unfortunately I think another scene gets that honor. :scream:

You can't be talking about....

No. NO.

I don't know, Obi-Wan's revised dragon call might be even worse, what with how utterly ridiculous it sounds.

The Ric Flair call to battle?

It's awful. Pretty bad. The very first DVD version of the Obi-Wan krayt dragon call is probably the best and sounds way better than the ridiculous Blu-ray change.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I remember when I got the digitally remastered OT in widescreen VHS - I'd never seen the films in widescreen before.

It was like seeing it again for the first time, truly. I still have the set.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I like the Ewoks blinking, though. Call me a heretic but I think it's a vast improvement for the little furballs to actually blink every so often, even if it doesn't happen that much in the Blu-Ray version. Growing up it always bugged me that the Ewoks never blinked, and those guys had a gaze deeper and bigger than Hugo Weaving after an eye exam.

I went looking for it but by that point they had already pulled it from stores. :scream:

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

It would be interesting to see them make an edition that keeps in the good changes and removes the bad ones. Maybe a fan favorite edition? It would never happen, but a guy can dream.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I've never liked the slapstick Jawa falling off the Ronto in Mos Eisley. We get it. It was 1997 and lifelike CGI creatures were the newest and hottest thing in big-budget filmmaking. But even in 1997 that crap just didn't look good dropped into the middle of a classic Star Wars film. I can tolerate or even like most of the other changes made to Mos Eisley because, quite frankly, a few of them make the spaceport look a lot busier and more eclectic and that was a feel that was always missing from the original version, but the fewer aliens doing goofy pratfalls from pack animals the better.

Also: the Biggs-Luke scene in Anchorhead should have been fully restored and digitally remastered at some point. That one deleted sequence contains more natural dialogue and character development than an entire Prequel film. It's a shame that it's never been incorporated back into the original movie.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Maybe it's just because I got so used to it, but I always preferred the sparser and more desolate Mos Eisley of the theatrical cut. Yeah it was a spaceport, but it was still on a backwater planet in the middle of nowhere, so it made sense that it wouldn't be super busy.

Plus it just felt much more realistic without all the creatures and ships and droids constantly buzzing around the screen (and also much more dangerous without the slapsticky jawa scene).

I don't disagree that it's a good scene, but the truth is that like the sandstorm scene in Jedi, there's really no good place to put that scene where it doesn't kill the pacing of the movie. Also, while there's some good character development, it does nothing to advance the plot and frankly, isn't the best introduction to Luke as a character.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Oh, almost forgot about those incredibly fake CG rocks they put in front of Artoo in ANH (which he is not only able to somehow squeeze through, but are nowhere to be found in later shots). Say huh? :wtf:

And with all the multitude of other changes he's made, Lucas for some reason still hasn't gotten around to putting a damn radar dish on top of the Falcon in Docking Bay 94. Which is the one change I would actually understand. Lol

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

The only thing that bothered me really was the dark spot they put on the Emperor in Jedi. What was that even for?

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

According to the Making of Jedi book, it was because too much light got in and it just didn't look right for some reason. Perhaps because McDiarmid's makeup didn't extend all the way back.

I know. I try not to rationalize it because it doesn't say anything flattering about the "logic" behind the alteration. With some changes - whether you like them or not - there's a kernel of logic and sense behind why George and his people made them. With others there's none, and the worst part about the new digital rocks is that the shots aren't even consistent with one another.

It'd be awesome if they made a checklist of changes and you could go in and check the ones you want and the ones you don't and have a custom version generated.
