Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

While its inessential to read books to "get" the movies, I became a huge SW fan because of the books, although I obviously love the OT a lot, too. It sucks that "my" Star Wars universe is done, but as long as the books are good I'll keep reading to see how they fill in the universe now. The movies are awesome, but the books, comics, etc. make it a full "Star Wars Universe" experience for me. They won't beat the old EU (which had a bunch of books that I consider even better stories than the OT movies), but I'm open to enjoying the new books.

This is, indeed and IMO, one of the principle failings of the PT. It had so much ambiguity, especially as it pertained to Palpatine, that there's hardly anything like a coherent narrative on screen at all. I don't want to mention any specifics, because I don't want to fire up the Debate Cannons™ tonight, but use your imagination and you should be able to get an idea what I'm talking about.

I have strong ideas about what you're referencing, and for the sake of both our collective sanity as a thread and to avoid several hours of wacky and very heated arguments I will not mention what I'm thinking. ;)

Ah, where is your sense of fun? ;)

It may sound odd, but I am looking forward to both these new books and have been enjoying the new comic series (especially Darth Vader). I know that Disney's chucking the old EU ruffled many fan feathers, but I for one am happy because I feel like I can jump in to these stories and actually feel like I can follow it without worrying about missing a section.

Also, I still enjoy a lot of the older books too, and have several of them. I just feel like I can step in and be caught up on the series as a whole.

I think at least some of the film's backstory will be covered in the opening scroll or something like that. "It has been three decades since the REBEL ALLIANCE's victory over the GALACTIC EMPIRE at Endor. However...." or something of that nature.

I'm wondering what the dynamic between Rey/Finn/Poe is going to be like, since it seems they're the new "Big three" if the panels at Celebration and comic con are anything to go by. I'm guessing that there might be a love triangle ala the OT(without hopefully the sibling connection thing), and I got the feeling that Poe-being an X-wing ace and possibly a resistance hero-probably doesn't trust Finn, who is a former Stormtrooper. And possibly vice versa.

I haven't seen the whole panel yet so maybe I'm missing some detail, but that's my guess.

If the opening crawl doesn't mention trade disputes or taxes, I'm going to be pissed.

It's funny you say this because there's a whole episode of "The Clone Wars" about de-regulating the banks, and it was actually one of my favorites.

I like to pretend that the PT are just long episodes of TCW, and it helps me stomach them better.

I think the meat of that arc was the whole thing going on with Clovis, Padme's ex-boyfriend and a seperatist sympathizer. There's a scene where Anakin sees them almost about to kiss, culminating in a brutal fight that strongly hints at what's to come....although it makes Padme's refusal to believe Anakin would go to the dark side in ROTS even more silly.

The Clovis arc does have that strong redeeming factor working in its favor. Any TCW episodes that displayed or hinted at Anakin's increasing anger and frustration and what he'll one day become were watchable episodes, no matter how mediocre or uninteresting the overall plot may have been.

Makes you wonder if Coruscant will have any part to play in the upcoming trilogy as well. Some say the planet was pretty much part of the problem, that it was the epitome of the overuse of CGI and plot problems of the films....however, this was a planet that was almost in ROTJ (Although with a different name) and had been appearing in Star Wars EU lore such as the novels, comics and video games, for nearly a decade before TPM even came out.

I actually think what might work best is have it become a semi-ruined battlefield for the various factions in the ongoing war, similar to how it was used in Dark Empire. Also would drive home some of the Republic/Empire=Rome parrarels used in both trilogies a bit IMO. Although to finish the parrarel it'd probably become a Jedi planet or something ;)

I'd say there's probably a better-than-good chance that we'll see the planet since it appeared in both the Prequel Trilogy and the very end of ROTJ, but unless it's become the capital and operating base for the New Republic/Resistance forces/whatever you want to call them or Imperial remnants are in partial or full control in this timeframe I don't expect we'll see the planet anywhere near as often as we did in Episodes I, II and III.

Focusing on other planets will probably be the focus of the Sequel Trilogy and it should be.

I'm thinking the First Order took over the power vacuum created by the fall of the Empire and prevented the new Republic from taking over. Kind of like what happened on Stargate SG1, after the fall of teh System Lords in The Reckoning and the Lucian Alliance came in and took over their ships and became a major power.

Whatever the First Order is, they still definetly have the Imperial stuff going on, Stormtroopers, TIE fighters, Star Destroyers, tri-winged shuttles, walkers (We've seen what appears to be a Walker leg briefly) and a mysterious guy in a black suit with a lightsaber. Plus the emblem is somewhat similar.

Curious what the rebel/resistance stuff will look like-we've seen of course the X-wings and their pilots, plus looks at Leia in costume and possibly Ackbar and Nien Nunb, but I'm curious if they still have the cruisers and fighters from ROTJ, or new ships. Or even older stuff like the Blockade runner, Escort frigate or the Y-wings.

Curious about how "Snoke" fits into all this, he's the guy Andy Serkis plays, and probably the guy speaking in the first trailer. . Serkis is using CG for this role so who knows how that'll turn out. Like Palpatine he might be some kind of leader for the order, and also like Palpatine seems to use the Force.

This is definitely my biggest question. I can imagine any number of Imperial leaders pulling together disparate elements to create their own little kingdoms of power. Maybe Snoke is one leader who pulls all those elements together to create a more powerful whole.

As for the tech, while I love the Rebel fleet in the OT, I am hoping that they get some upgrades to their tech.

Snoke could be a warlord of sorts who uses his Force powers to hold together his little principality or territory and just happens to have the biggest and/or most powerful one in that region of the galaxy. In the aftermath of the Rebel victory at Endor and the deaths of both the Emperor and Darth Vader what was left of the Empire no doubt scrambled to fill the power vacuum wherever the local Moffs, Admirals and Commanders could pull together the muscle and ambition to seize authority. Even the old EU depicted that, so I can't imagine that the official post-Jedi political landscape would be any more peaceful or smoothly-governed.

I'm curious what exactly the relationship between Snoke, Gen. Hux, and Kylo Ren will be.

This is exactly what worries me about the new movies. I hope JJ didn't take the anti-prequel backlash to mean that he should simply remake the original movies.
