Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

I really wish the Jawa and Ronto slapstick with the passing swoop bike had been left on the cutting room floor. I like or can at least tolerate the new CGI additions to Mos Eisley except for the Ronto gag (appropriately named if you ask me) and the unnecessary pack animal lumbering in front of Luke's landspeeder at the start of the confrontation with the Sandtroopers. That was a bit much and nobody really had to see a CGI animal hide lurch by the camera during one of the most iconic moments of the original film.
That one scene is the one I really despise. A ronto taking up the entire screen is annoying enough, but they also basically wiped out an astromech to do so.
And a pretty colorful and cool-looking R5 unit at that. I've always liked that Creamsicle-orange R5 that rolls by just as the Sandtroopers stop Luke and Ben and begin questioning them. It may be one of the few Original Trilogy astromechs that hasn't had at least one action figure made of it.

The one I'm referring to is R2-A5, while the orange one is R5-A2. The R2 got replaced by the ronto, not the R5. And it did have an action figure, but it was a build-a-droid.

Wait, I might have overlooked an action figure of an Original Trilogy astromech droid, even a Build-A-Droid version?

To the eBay!

Interesting Project: [...] This in my opinion is one of the best versions of the film out there- unofficial but he corrects/improves on the movie, doing the things that ILM should have done in the first place.

That project is 90% garbage.
Agreed, that shit looks silly.

Harmy's Star Wars Despecialized Editions are the only fan edits worth checking out.

Adywan's re-edits of the Original Trilogy films are very, very cool to watch even if I don't like all of the changes he made. His digital tweaks to Yoda's puppet in ESB to give him the appearance of flexing facial muscles when he's talking to Luke is not only a very effective change and looks better than even the Prequel CGI Yoda but it becomes a very creepy moment when Luke says he's not afraid and Yoda glares at him with Adywan's alterations and you can see his brow furrowing a little.

One thing they added in the DVDs that cracks me up, is when the storm trooper hits his head in ANH, they added a VO of one of the other troopers being ordered to make sure he is alright.

Yeah, I forgot about Adywan. His work was incredibly impressive, although much of it was over the top. Didn't he add the Imperial March to ANH? That was kinda lame, IMO.

I don't remember if that change was his doing or another fan edit but Adywan did the best job of anybody to date who wasn't connected with Lucasfilm and had access to millions of dollars worth of company resources. A lot of his changes were to make the picture look better by making, say, space look darker, stars stand out better against the background and uniforms and costumes match shades and tints of color from scene to scene.

Only checked out some of the Revisted edit so far, but I did notice how they inserted the Obi-Wan vs Anakin theme into the Obi-Wan vs Vader battle.

I get what they were going for with making the fight seem more meaningful, but it still sounded WAY too big and epic for the simpler, slower moves the two were making in ANH. Lol

I think "garbage" may be a bit strong. The edits may be unnecessary and over the top, but there's still a lot of very skilled work that went into them, and the changes are really no more intrusive than the numerous changes Lucas himself made.

Of course as far as I'm concerned, the only tweaks the OT needs, if anything, is just in the removal of some of the more obvious matte lines (like during the Rancor sequence). That's the only artifact from old school filmmaking that I have no problem getting rid of.

We're absolutely not going to get anywhere here. I'm generally loath to play the off-topic card, but fan edits are really off-topic here.

That is one thing the Blu ray of ROTJ accomplished that none of the previous home video edits had: eliminating the horrible matte lines around the Rancor. Even the 2004 and 2006 DVDs left them in place as they looked in the original theatrical release and they just looked horrible and stood out even way back in the 1980s. Whatever we can say about George's digital changes and edits, at least some of them made perfect sense and should be applauded.

I wonder what the reaction in the Trek Movie forum would be...

I'm not sure but I think it would be epic and rather hilarious. Most topics over there eventually become one or both.

Oh god.

Yeah, that change was terrible and very much so. One of the best things about the original Vader and Obi-Wan lightsaber battle is the pacing and almost complete lack of any background music.

I had thought the 2004 DVDs improved the Rancor somewhat, but I haven't checked in a while and my memory could be faulty. But if the Blu-rays fixed the problem all the way that's great.
