Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

My thoughts exactly. Star Wars does not have flashbacks.

Has there been any real evidence to support this rumor? Carrie Fisher's daughter appearing in the film alone? That she must play a young Leia is a HUGE assumption! Carrie Fisher early on, even before any of the big 3 were officially confirmed, explained her daughters appearance. When George Lucas first revealed his plans to her and Mark Hamill she agreed to be involved instantly. All she asked for was for her daughter to appear in it.

So I doubt its a huge role that was integral to the story. It might just be a cameo. Mark Hamill's son Nathan was in The Phantom Menace.

True. His son played one of the Naboo guards. I think it was the officer that let Anakin enter the Queen's quarters so he could tell her goodbye because he was about to begin his training at the Jedi Temple.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

That's assuming we get the old three back. If not, and its just a story with younger actors playing the trio, there isn't much to be done, except to at least try to not be as stupid as some of the prequel stuff. In this scenario, just not having a lame comedy relief character like Jar Jar is about the best that could be hoped for.

Ever heard of the wise fool? That's what Jar Jar was (and is.) It wasn't Lucas's fault that most people are culturally fucked up and didn't know what that concept/kind of character was or is. But, I guess years of cynicism is hard to wash away.

Oh for f^&ks sake:klingon:

I mean, who posts quotes from a year ago? I get that someone might read the beginning of a thread this big and not go all the way through, but at this point its starting to feel like I have the Ghost of Posts Past bringing my old replies back in my face what feels like every week or so. In case anyone who hasn't been following is wondering, I'm very excited for the movie, and I really support it. Any comments I made in freaking JANUARY 2014 can be ignored as stupidity that doesn't represent my opinion anymore.

That said, my opinion on Jar Jar Binks hasn't changed one bit, but that opinion didn't seem to go against most peoples anyway

And, as I mentioned above, it's Darth Vader. For all intents and purposes, he's the symbol of Star Wars. Kids love him. Teenagers. Grown adults. Even some elderly movie fans probably love the guy if they saw the original films. Most Darth Vader toys do well at retail so releasing a Vader toy when the new movie is in theaters is just smart business whether Vader's actually in the film or not.

I still hope Billy Dee returns for at least a quick cameo in Episode VII, but even if he doesn't make an appearance then being on Rebels is a nice little consolation prize for old school Lando fans. And who knows, maybe he'll appear in both.

Honestly, I'll be more surprised if they don't find away to get Vader and Yoda in the films (or least JEJ and Oz's voices) in some fashion than if they do.

I get the feeling Yoda's Force ghost will be a recurring character in the Sequel Trilogy even if Anakin's and Obi-Wan's aren't. CGI and Frank Oz recording some dialogue are all you need to get the little green guy back on the big screen.

Yeah I'll be very bummed if we don't get to see Yoda again at some point in the sequels.

A reappearance by Vader would be cool as well (perhaps in another Dark Side vision by Luke, like the one he had in ESB), but it's not something I'll be terribly sad about if it doesn't happen.

Rumor has it that, based on a toy like release, a certain iconic character will make an appearance.
I wouldn't read to much into that. Movie toys are always released for things that aren't actually in the movie. They had Skrull figures for Avengers, and I'm pretty sure they had Red Skull figures for The Winter Soldier.

That was true about TWS. Star Wars: I hope this is not yet another exercise in "we cannot tell a story without pointless callbacks to the original films", since that was one of the worst problems of the prequels. You would think the SW galaxy is only a single city block long and populated by two families, for how close and/or clannish too many of the players were.

My guess would be this is a one-off example of flashbacks within the live-action films and exist solely for the purpose of connecting the Sequel to the Prequel and Original Trilogies and allow Darth Vader to make an appearance, a concept with which I have no real problem so long as it doesn't become a recurring feature that stretches across Episodes VII, VIII and IX like some regular Peter Griffin cutaway bit featuring Star Wars characters.

I have a tough time imagining a good Star Wars movie that doesn't have Vader there in some capacity.

And cue the extended Nerdrage, only this time it'll be the sexists and not the racists. There's never been any canon to establish that all Imperial Stormtroopers are male (or for that matter white or look like Jango Fett or can't shoot straight, although the last point appears to have some validity to it) but that won't stop the more intolerant nerds.
